| It still hurts | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| It still hurts I got a very nice rosewood table and six chairs at auction for $350 but the chairs (Kai Christensen) were a design that tends to get wobbly, so I decided to look for sturdier ones. The same auction house had a set of 8 N.O. Møller dining chairs in rosewood about a year later. I went up to around $900 on them. An absentee bidder got them for $1000 and that was his top bid. I felt like crying. I would have gone higher but hubby put the breaks on because of some pending payment for something else that ended up getting postponed for awhile. A ... | |||||

| ... they have the oval shock mount of what I'm pretty sure is neoprene (solid, not foam as I'd thought). I think you could make these. The hardware isn't anything unusual, just a bolt and a nut. The neoprene part has two 5/8" (?) holes for the nuts but I don't think any hardware is embedded in the neoprene at all, is it? I'm not looking forward to scraping off the failed epoxy from the wood and shock mount of my one chair. At least I didn't try that on the other one. And as for the screw hole in the back of the one---I dunno. I guess I could get the whol ... | |||||

| yikes! Two rosewood Eames lounge chairs and ottomans for $50?! I'd have had a heart attack and died before I could get them into my car! I nearly had a heart attack last night at an auction where there was a modern rocking chair that i wanted. No visible marks but it looked good and my daughter had asked me to keep an eye out for one for when they have kids someday. (She's the one who will be the first to use the Nanna ditzel cradle that I got for $30---I think I posted about it in this thread already a few months ago.) Anyway, some guy started talking to ... | |||||

| Thanks guys! No, you didn't come across as being unfeeling at all. I know that finding one exactly like it would be a crapshoot...that's why I'm looking for something in that similiar style. The closest example that I can give you is this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6623217010&ssPag... but instead of it being an end table, imagine it a full dinette table. That's what I lost. T_T | |||||

| Thanks I really appreciate your response. I recently bought a Floating chair and apart from slightly wobbily legs, it's in good condition. The person I bought it from reckoned it was 40-50 years old but didn't know any more than that. It's such a beautiful piece of furniture that I was surprised there was so little information about Elias Svedberg on the web, so many thanks for filling in the gaps. | |||||
| INTRO- DON'T PAINT JUST YET | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | ChrisG-52 | General discussion | |
| INTRO- DON'T PAINT JUST YET It sounds like what you're suggesting is just copying the stripe from your carpet-tile pattern onto your walls. With your open floorplan- the faux oil painting in the ornate frame above the piano, and the dining room set with the persian rug, it's going to clash. I'd reconsider, think long and hard before you go down the path you've chosen... sorry, that sounded a bit heavy, didn't it? But seriously... --- cont. ---> | |||||
| How can I tell if it's echt or ersatz Eames? | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | ms.muffy | General discussion | |
| How can I tell if it's echt or ersatz Eames? Hello, I'm clueless! But thankfully my Google-search quest for knowledge has led me here. I just bought an Eames(y) chair off Craigslist, and was hoping to find a checklist of ways to tell if it's the real thing or not. I flipped it over and didn't notice any obvious marks. Can anyone tell just by looking? http://www.flickr.com/photos/26117668@N00/122840124/ Thanks in advance for any info... | |||||
| Yea, they were produced in colors by Cassina | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | lege.artis | General discussion | |
| ... look at the signatures a while ago I noticed that the frame was rather hastily painted too. The paint didn't cover the tube completely on the side where the signatures are. On Cassinas website in the US they have a side kalled "Knock-offs"http://www.cassinausa.com/knockoffs.html On my LC4 bought by an authorized dealer in 1975 there are no broad rubber bands but springs like the picture of "counterfeits". Even Cassina made the LC4 with springs supporting the mattress in those days. The springs are OK, they haven't sagged but the rubber and the plastic cover ... | |||||

| wall mounted shelves hello CD -lover, recently i found myself faced with a similar question: where to find nice cd- racks (for a whole lot of CD's ! :oD). i really like all the backs of my CD's on display, which makes browsing such a breeze. v nice when you're quickly trying to locate a CD to match your mood ! Since i don't have a lot of floor space to sacrifice, my search was limited to wall mounted stuff. really really liked barber osgerby's 'loop' shelves (for a picture, check eg the twentytwentyone site). unfortunately, these racks are rather costly & th ... | |||||

| I should also mention... I bought my Wassily's second-hand and neither came with glides- I didn't like the look of the clip-on glides, so one solution that really worked for me was to pick up some of those clear rubber adhesive "dots" you can find at Office Depot or Target... they're meant to be stuck underneath lamps or phones or other things you don't want slipping about- I put four of those under my chairs, secured them with a tiny (very tiny) dab of Gorilla glue- they are invisible unless the chair is upside down, protect my floors, and also keep the cha ... | |||||

| ... Wright's work is "bad". When Mies relocated to the states, he didn't just come to America, he came right to Wright's front doorstep, and set-up shop in Chicago. There was a famous incident when Wright stormed out of an event in Mies honor shortly after his arrival, and pronounced something to the effect of "That is the man that will render my work irrelevant!" or something brash like that (It was probably a better quote.). It was very a famous incident (I haven't bothered to look up the story, but if you're quick, you could beat me to it, and post the detai ... | |||||

| vintage alternative i may be wrong about this, but didn't Eames design this chair specifically to have the rosewood veneer? i certainly don't know of any early examples in anything but rosewood. and i believe that the dec'n to stop making 'em in rosewood came in the early 90s, allegedly for environmental concerns (i am skeptical of this, btw; surely some sustainable rosewood can be found?) but even apart from the 'designer's intent' issue, i suggest you spend roughly the same amount of money for a pre-1990's rosewood version (in good cond'n, of course). t ... | |||||

| I went with walnut... After looking, I quickly went with walnut and am loving it. The wood grain stands out, I think thats why I like it so much. The other colors look almost like fake plastic wood to me(don't ask me why). I didn't bother trying to get something like the original rosewood, I figured that i'm in the 21st century and i should buy a 20th century version. | |||||

| ... that they do which I like, I didn't mean that that's ALL they do. If Ligne Roset came to them and asked them to design a chair and that company is known for expensive prices, that isn't the Bourrellecs' fault. Just because they haven't produced anything low cost that's loved by everyone doesn't mean they are not capable to do that, they are still quite young compared to many successful designers out there, remember that. If your definition of a great designer is still one that has produced something that is cheap and recognized around the world, than we're ... | |||||
