| I don't really care who... I don't really care who collects these. I think they're cool. I didn't say they were pretentious, I said it is silly to pay this much for a toy. I did enter in a contest to win all the vitra miniatures once. I would have loved to win of course. | |||||

| Norm,...... These items are not listed as being designed by George Nelson & his Associates....they're listed as being by George Nelson, an individial person. Had Nelson created a name for his practice that didn't make people think like he designed every item, then there would be little reason for this "revisionist" view these many years later. From the get-go, the Marshmellow Sofa should've been listed as Designed by Irving Harper George Nelson Associates In this respect, I fear Nelson is no better than Phil Spector who took credit for everything and didn't ... | |||||

| Exhibition I emailed the guy who is setting it up and mentioned the book idea and what it should be spotlighting (clocks, other Howard Miller pieces, melmac dinnerware, lamps, etc.) and here's his reply: ----------------------------------- Hello, Yes, I have visited Irving Harper in Rye and we plan to acknowledge his contribution and those of other staff members to the designs created in the office. In our catalogue we will have an essay in that discusses the industrial design of George Nelson Associates for companies other than Herman Miller and the many de ... | |||||

| I grew up with it My Dad was stuck in 70's design my Grandmother in 60's design and my Aunt loved antiques. None of it was high end pieces. My Dad's idea of modern furniture was Macy's (YUCK!!). I didn't know much about it then, but I always wondered what the hell was he thinking! And can we get rid of this horrible burnt orange CRAP!! My friends thought we had a great place and I thought it was hideous, ofcourse I kept this to myself. I collected at a young age, music boxes, fall leaves, rocks, butterflies. I also edited my collections, only the brightest ... | |||||

However, I'm planning on putting the chairs around a Saarinen tulup table and think it might be a bit to much white if the cushions are also white...that was the main reason I didn't want to go with the tulip chairs, a bit too much white with a white table and white chairs. Have to find a reasonable priced tulip table first though 🙂 It's the shipping that's killing me so I keep holding out hoping to come across one in driving distance.

I have gotten lots of old butterfly chair frames at junk auctions over the years. I have about ten, I think. One had a broken weld but I had a friend fix it in exchange for some homemade chocolate chip cookies. The rest just needed a bit of wire brushing and two coats of flat black Rustoleum spray paint. The most I paid per chair was maybe $2. Once I got three for $2.31, which came to 77 cen ...

| The big fairs like Newark,... The big fairs like Newark, Swinderby and Ardingly still throw up the odd interesting thing. Usually a fair sprinkling of Modern stuff at Kempton Park (twice a month)as well. Even car boot sales - I saw something genuinely astonishing come up at a London boot sale a couple of weeks ago, for peanuts (alas I didn't get to it first....) | |||||

| butterfly chairs Does anyone know how to tell if you have a Knoll frame? didn't Knoll stop making them in 1951 after they lost a copyright infringement suit? I bought two frames on Craigs List a couple weeks ago--$50 for the pair. They need paint, but still a very good deal it would seem, because there was just a single frame on Ebay for $350! | |||||

He laughed and took me to a store room where he had literally hundreds of the things that were good for nothing but spare parts. | ... in both the title and description, the fact that it was so similar in design to the Eames chair made my reference to Eames unacceptable. He said I was using the Eames name to advertise a chair that was in direct competition with true Eames chairs. I looked the guy up and he was indeed a laywer for Eames, even though he'd used a personal email address to get in touch with me. I emailed him later and suggested he use a company email address when contacting people on behalf of his employer. That part was kinda odd. I didn't cancel the auction since he email ...

| James, that picture is from Look Modern. it's such a nice picture that I didn't think I could improve it, so I just used theirs. Mine is exactly the same. Mine is sitting on (and dwarfing) a Nelson side table. It was just a low priced impulse piece, because I don't really need it. It doesn't light up much, since it listed as only taking 60 watt bulb and because of it's design, it lights downward. I saw a real one at a local shop in red and admired it for awhile (it was priced $700.00). I did finally sell. | |||||

I tried reading "The Fountainhead" once upon a time but as person with ADHD, I didn't get through it. But I did see the movie! Objectivism is an interesting concept, but like most free thinkers of era, she had no middle ground and was a bit lacking in world of perspective. In my twisted world, all great modern architects and designers were liberial, but with their feet ...
