| Woof Woof-- I didn't intend my post to sound as sarcastic as it apparently did-- I really diD believe you when you said Lysol removes dried paint, and was disappointed when you reported your results. Home remedies often sound ridiculous, even if they ARE effective-- peanut butter used to remove chewing gum, hemorrhoid cream smeared around the eye to look youthful, etc... | |||||

| I don't understand your claim... I don't understand your claim that Modernica changed the material. Modernica was reproducing these chairs before the new plastic versions emerged. Several pieces Modernica makes were previously discontinued. They are providing desired items previously unavailable to the public ... the fiberglass chair, the nelson lamps, the grasshopper chair, the nelson beds, to name a few. If anything, those that prefer new should be thanking them. And again, reproductions are a class higher than knock-offs. I personally don't mind buying a ... | |||||

So, if they were so good, why did Herman Miller drop them? ... Lucy, I assume nothing -- remember? I am a skeptic. I question only your assumption that they are not up to snuff. Please, I invite you to prove this theory with hard, tenable evidence. No wassailing from the gut on this. The onus is on you, who believes, to prove to me why companies like Daniel D ...

You assume that Modernica's quality IS equal to Herman Miller or Knoll or Carl Hansen etc. I'll assume that assumption is based on the fact that Modernica used to make the ESUs. So, if they were so good, why did Herman Miller drop them? I don't mind friendly competition, or development of new ideas. There are plenty of new designers who are making great strides in the spirit of Modernism. The fact that Modernica makes a knock-off that doesn't totally suck doesn't excuse the fact that they are using designs in a dishonest wa ...
| I built houses | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | Big Television Man | General discussion | |
| I built houses for a couple of summers while in college. Gave me some very practical life skills but it didn't take long to see that it would be a brutally hard way to make a living during a New England winter, or I suppose, an Austin summer 30 years into the future. One of the greatest lessons you'll learn though is "Measure twice, cut once" it will apply to a great many things going forward. Good luck in whichever direction life takes you! | |||||
| Razor blades are excellent to use on spatter & raised "globs" | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | william-holden-... | General discussion | |
| Razor blades are excellent to use on spatter & raised "globs" I didn't mean to dismiss your suggestion. My most recent project consisted of pieces that had been HEAVILY swabbed with paint, a fate specific to wall-mounted stuff, when people are too lazy to remove it before painting. It's exasperating to spend hours slowly rubbing off paint, particularly when it results from the spectacularly bad paint job of a blind, lazy, ham-handed painter. Grrr. | |||||

| Amazing! What an amazing show! I'm truly impressed by the full spectrum of talent. I had to leave a day early to speak at green industry show here in LA, but I definitely didn't want to. Emeco and Vitra were right next to us and so was Herman Miller! Our series was extremely well received and I would be happy to post a link (or via email) if any of you are curious. | |||||

| P40 tecno there's one i'll allways regret: a P40 chair by Osvaldo Borsani for Tecno. It stood in a junkshop for about 60?, but the foam was almost fossilized and i didn't know the design back then. tragedy is: i really come to like that specific chair.. | |||||

| design for everybody I didn't like reading that letter either. There is often a defensive stance from Eames. I don't think they need to protect themselves from the likes of Modernica. Everyone knows who Charles and Ray are. Everyone appreciates it. Everyone loves it. Fact is the shell chair the Eames Office is behind is not desirable to many of us. I get it, Charles and Ray would have made it in plain ol' plastic these days. But they didn't. They aren't here anymore (God bless their wonderful souls). People interested in design are often more interested in t ... | |||||

I disagree, by the way, that this chair would have sold for more with more buzzwords in the title. Most people looking for Kjaerholm are looking for Kjaerholm, I think, and are not whimsical or casual about their search. To put your mind at ease -- if you had bid, you still might not have won it. I bid once on a musical instrument that was somewhat local to me, only to have an acquaintance from the West Coast outbid me by what seemed like fifty dol ...

| sick I'm still sick over not bidding! Because they didn't list it with "Eames Danish Modern" in the title it was literally hidden in the Ebay labyrinth. I just should have bitten the bullet and plugged in $3000 but I choked and let it go.... days later I am still thinking about it and then I see your thread...ugh! did you bid??? So...how disgusting would it be to buy a repro??? (see below) I can't believe I lost my cajones. I wonder why the sellers didn't have a reserve? They have some PK-22 chairs starting at $7,000 whereas the PK-31 started at a doll ... | |||||

| Wise words by all of you. Thanks to all. I quit my job yesterday. The boss was an extremely angry and awkward man. I couldn't take his disrespectful words and I decided to move on. I very respectfully informed him that I too have been the "boss" before and I never treated people in this manner. I added that if he is an impatient man that is fine, but he might prefer coming off another 3 or four dollars an hour for someone more skilled. He seemed very distraught at the situation saying "this has happened to me five times in a row." With his demeaning demeanor ... | |||||

| Here are the two or three starting points: 1. A V O I D . G O O D . T A S T E Avoid ,,good taste,,, and I do not mean ,avoid beauty,. But if it's a little bit difficult to see the difference, avoid both. Yes better avoid both. We know where 'good taste' could drive us. Here we are! Why not explore what Ugliness could teach us? Since begin of XXI, contemporary art dosen't need to looks for beauty. Head Book: On Ugliness, by Umberto Eco.
