| ... turns ! Viewers here will have to imagine the red brick plaza and base elements, contrasting with the creamy precast parts of the building. It became fashionable, in Boston if not elsewhere, to deride this structure almost from the time that it was built. I like it far more than our "pyramid' office tower here in San Francisco, which was assailed at first but became a "beloved landmark." I could only hope the same has happened in Boston, but I'm not sure. . . Thanks for that, BTM. As I watched Al Gore speak the other night, I lamented again the fact the ... | |||||

| uh oh I was snappy. But great to see a good series of postings. Trex has been on my disaster list for a long time. Most of the searches are still there when googling. Even a law suit i think. Earlier Trex and similar products are being replaced left and right. Off to the landfill. Another green not so green... Now a mold issue has come up and may be coming from inside the product. Concrete block has a grand history. Lottaliving has an ongoing thread of patterns from the 50's to some new ones being made now. I've been apologizing all morning. I sprayed the ba ... | |||||

| Joelle, you're dealing with an advanced group of collectors and fans of design here. Most of us have been through the basics over and over again, and it's difficult for most of us to patiently put on our 'teacher' caps and answer your very generic question. When I started seriously going after good design, I spent the time and money to buy books of the era. Some of these books are not cheap, but I have saved myself hundred of dollars by learning who's who and what's what. It has been discussed here before, but most people seem to find that certain Art Nove ... | |||||

| Wow If being rude and ridiculing someone who is humbly looking for help makes me "right," I'm happy I'm the "wrong" person for the job. How would one acquire knowledge without asking people who appear to "know?" I was just looking for reliable websites, some basic information, or some knowledge that I didn't have before. If that is too much to ask, then please don't offend me with your rudeness. | |||||

| Olive... I just saw another Can-Am Spyder today and I stopped to talk to the owner. When the helmet came off, it was a 62 year old grand mother. She said she was sick of riding on the back of her husband's BMW and, yet, did not trust herself to pilot her own two-wheeler--too tall--and she didn't like the shorter bikes she tried. Now, she says her husband is about to sell his BMW and buy a Spyder, too. Women! They always entice us into eating the apple. 🙂 | |||||

| Boy do I feel like an idiot! LOL Um... it seems like it might indeed slide, but I already have too much stuff on top of it to find out for sure. I can't believe it didn't slide around when I was moving it, had no clue it was not attached to the legs! And SDR, thanks for the term - but do they do this on unveneered wood? I don't see any evidence that it's not solid wood (but, ahem, I've just revealed something about my powers of observation so...) | |||||

| Well I'm not afraid to admit that I have the cheap Target Graves one -- I didn't know what it was but picked it up at a thrift store when the glass one I had been using broke, and I'm ambivalent about this one. I like that the handle is way the hell up in the air and doesn't get hot, but I don't like how these metal ones make a ton of noise when heating up (until I've had my coffee, it's shhhhhhhhhhhhh please). I don't mean the whistle thing, I always remove those and stuff them in a drawer, but the metal itself makes noise when it's first heating up. So i ... | |||||

| Hiring Nakashima Here's a fascinating little story we learned on our recent trip to Kentuck Knob. When FLW designed the house for the Hagans, all of the furniture was built-in, i.e. cantilevered into the stone walls. This included the banquette seating, the shelving, the dining table, the beds, etc. Everything was built to his specs inside the rooms as an integral part of the walls. Well, Mrs. Hagan wanted some freestanding furniture in addition to the built-ins and asked FLW to design her some. He would only give her the plans for the typical Usonian bui ... | |||||

Place is crucial, to know one's and to celebrate such arrival, to finally - for whatever it might be worth - get the s(c)tick. I was thinking I would put this up at the Desperation thread, but here seems good, so what the hell. A poem by Charles Simic, which I believe should say a lot to not just the world but to the material world as well, titled County Fair If you didn't see the six-legged dog, It doesn't matter. We did, and he mostly lay in the corner. As for the extra legs ... | |||||

| Cado - PS sytem (and which is easier to find...) So just to clarify - is the "PS System" also designed by Cadovius? Recently I cam across the Cado Royal (with wire brackets) and a "PS System" - which I didn't know was a Cado piece. Is it? Does anyone have opinions as to which are easier to find: pieces for the Cado Royal or a non-wire-bracket PS Sytem (both in rosewood)? I'm considering one or the other but will want to add to it eventually....if that's even possible, given their scarcity! | |||||

| ... took something already out there and completely reinvented the use of it. One of the roots of the ready-made concept is, I think, the basic mind-set of peasant/hillbilly frugality. Don't throw something away that you can reuse or repurpose. Has anyone seen the quilts made by the women of Gee's Bend, Alabama? Take a look at the link below. The quilts are gorgeous, funtional art made from cast offs and throw-aways. And look at the women who make these things, not designers, just simple folk who raised their humble reuse projects into art. And did they think t ... | |||||

| I like this one! "The dining area contains an Op table (a Blackman Cruz Workshop staple)" I actually got a bit caught up scanning the site. Looks like they mention all the furniture designers on each page except that one. I also noticed an e-mail link button that responds to each page. did you try it?
