| Contract Contract bases are fairly common on eBay. Try MetroRetro in Texas - they usually have 4-5 at any given time. I found mine on Craigslist for $25 - so it's worth it to do some digging. I didn't see much difference in mine other than the patination of the aluminum foot. If you want super shiny aluminum buy new - it's almost impossible to polish those things out without specialized equipment. | |||||
| ...and when I was planning to get some | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| ...and when I was planning to get some decent mid-century furniture (starting 4 years ago), I decided against the 670 Lounge chair not because of it being fragile, but because 1) it was almost too iconic and 2) I didn't want a lounge chair that swivels. What did I get? I bought a vintage Grasshopper chair and ottoman and has it repaired and recovered and it's perfect. Perhaps I made the right decision! | |||||

| ... are sometimes bored with ID threads but as it has been said, they are sometimes interesting and they allow us to discover objects that we didn't know before. Of course, it's a question of proportion. If the forum was overwhelmed by this kind of questions and that other more interesting threads would get lost, it would be a problem. We will keep an eye on it and we will think of solutions if needed. As it has been suggested, it's probably the price of fame. Following the introduction of the DesignRadar (which is a great success) and the modifications done to ... | |||||

| Even MORE interesting... Didn't know that the forensics guy was also involved with the new Da Vinci! Casts interesting light on the idea that the origin of the discovery has much to do with the authentication process. Meaning, that they are saying the Pollock is fake because, despite the forensic evidence, the person who discovered it was not "in the scene" and the painting was discovered in such a humble setting, whereas the the Da Vinci, with similar forensic authentication (even from the same source) was discovered in more "appropriate setting" is pretty ... | |||||
| It's possible | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| It's possible that longer-term members (readers) of the forum experienced an idyllic period of "free discussion," unhampered by the more mundane aspects of collecting. One might say "it couldn't last indefinitely." I don't think new readers should have to apologize for making use of what must be an obvious and attractive resource, namely a compact, readily-available (and cost-free) collection of knowledgeable (or at least experienced) collectors. How could it be otherwise ? If those in need had a way of, say, bringing flowers or a bottle of wine to the par ... | |||||
| Can you identify my chairs? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| Can you identify my chairs? I found this thread while trying to identify my chairs, and they look pretty similar. Can anyone help? I'm fairly sure the wood is teak and I'm now pretty much convinced they're Danish modern. Based on the taxes, I know they date back to somewhere between 1948 and the 1970s (I found them in Israel, and the tax stamps list a different kind of money than we use today). The footstool is unrelated; it probably dates from the same period but didn't come with the chairs. Thanks!! | |||||

| I guess I'm lucky that I bought a BluDot Paperclip desk right at the time that it was being discontinued. I bought it 2 years ago and it's holding up nicely. I didn't buy the EDU because I wanted a desk with a proper pull out keyboard drawer. | |||||

| hmmm I'm just home from 6 airports in 3 days... Wheels for me. I zipped past the poor souls with big soft pouches over shoulders like pack mules. Washington/Dulles, Newark without wheels? Didn't lift it till i got to my car. Doubles as a laptop table while waiting, even a seat if needed. Nothing fancy, just good quality. And note, all pilots and stewardesses wheel the same. Baggage handlers prefer them. Top handle, and side handle. Easier for them to pack on their carts and the birds belly. I do travel light. But even for long trips i have a big soft duffel with a hard sled bottom with wheels! Opens wide from top to bottom. Not fond of flying but i do like vintage airport furniture... | |||||

| Wow! I wish I had read further down! This is so funny! I wanted to say that my desk was really not very attractive, but I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings out there. My mother actually "anitqued" it back in 1970, and it's horrible looking! I just wanted to see if it was worth refinishing! After I got to the bottom of all the comments, I was pretty much enlightened! (and entertained! 🙂 | |||||
| Thanks, Lloyd (LRF) | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| Thanks, Lloyd (LRF) but I didn't want marble (the weight, the cost, the carpet being grey, etc.) I would've preferred walnut wood but it looks really nice in front of this rather jazzy sofa (and across from an Aalto Zebra fabric tank chair). SDR: When I got to Greyhound to pick up the table, I was amazed at how heavyweight the metal frame is. Solid and none of the legs are bent...I doubt if it would be easy or affordable to reproduce that level of T angle iron quality. Also, the formica top is solid, thick and strong too. | |||||

| Two Awful Stories I saw an ad on CL about an estate sale. Right Away I spotted the perfect sofa on the pics. It was a Grete Jalk Three seater teak sofa. I couldn't sleep thinking about it. Woke up at 6 am and didn't know what to do to wait until 9am for the sale to start. Took my dog for a walk etc. Decided to leave in time to arrive an hour early. Well, not too early. There were about 30 people in front of me when I could have gotten there at 6am hehe. The sofa was sold in a matter of seconds it was in pristine condition, even the original upholstery. | ... I didn't fall out of the chair. I wasn't hurt in the slightest (broken heart not withstanding). I didn't mean for this to be a referendum on the chair's "design flaws." That's been covered in several other threads - usually as a thinly veiled solicitation for repair work. For all the whiners, you're welcome to post for comparison all the products you've had in uninterrupted production for 52 years running. I loved this chair when I bought it, still do, continue to sit in it every day. And yes... I will be posting the whole process. Just had to get all ... | |||||
| What amazes me is that | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Modern Love | General discussion | |
| What amazes me is that it was green-lighted from the initial concept, through production, all the way until released. Along the way, was there anyone that thought "Hey, this idea is kind of cheesy", or did they not want to speak up for fear of losing their job. Perhaps it was a room full of suits saying "Yes, yes! Great idea boss! Genius!" "Remember we need one single mom, one elderly person, one cool alternative "dude", and don't forget one black man." Remember the Seinfeld collab? That didn't work out either. Poor Microsoft. | |||||

| Love the 3473 Barry is right on. The 3473 is so much more refined (and rare) than the compact. They also don't typically cost much more than a compact. Oh... and the one on Ebay was way overpriced, and didn't sell. | |||||
