| For the record, I didn't mean to imply that there's anything morally-ambiguous about sniping-- I've done it myself for years. Sniping is just an unforeseen consequence of internet auctions with fixed end times. If Ebay wanted to make its auctions more auction-like-- and more beneficial for sellers-- the open-ended finish that Zanone initially suggested would be a completely fair & logical solution. Sniping is just a sneaky loophole-- or a design flaw -- that everyone's discovered. | |||||
| There was no intentional collusion | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| There was no intentional collusion I just didn't want to compete with someone I knew....simple as that. I did not retract any of my bids and my communicating with a friend didn not have anything to do with the other potential bidders. Jeez...some of you guys sit up on your ivory thrones making inappropriate judgement calls a bit too much. That's one of the problems why this forum is not as fun as it used to be. I did nothing wrong, feel no guilt, and in my opinion, it worked alot better when i knew the eBay name of the bidders. Why must you make me feel li ... | |||||

Some of them want that particular thing and some don't want anyone else to have that particular thing (the second one being more of a chronic problem for people who do it). Snipe bids, from what I've seen in watching thousands of auctions, tend to be closer to the market value of an item. The more people sniping, the more likely the thing will end at a reasonable market value. Bidding wars, on the other hand, are more likely to drive the price up above market value, which can discourage future buyi ...

| lap marks SDR, do you mean that you get lap marks with rub-on polyurethane? I didn't have any trouble with my table top because it was small enough to one entire coat at a time. I just made sure the finish hadn't pooled anywhere before leaving each coat to dry. I remember years ago reading that polyurethane is hard to touch up. This was in regards to floor finishing, probably for worn areas or scratches. It supposedly was hard to feather into the old finish. I don't know if that's still the case but maybe that's what you're talking about? I seem to rem ... | |||||

| Can someone please ID the... Can someone please ID the designer of this couch for me. I see that its available for free on Craig's List, but I don't want to waste my time if it doesn't have the appropriate pedigree. I'm thinking it may have been designed by that guy Eames Era....didn't he also have a brother named Ray? | |||||

| You caught me editing on the ... You caught me editing on the hop:) I didn't want to be nasty to a new person, I've made some stupid and rude comments in the past myself. Another forum I go on has a sticky thread at the top explaining things like how to post photos and a reminder to be polite, perhaps we could have that here until the changes happen. | |||||

| I did a coffee table with... I did a coffee table with the rub-on poly and somehow it looks much less plastic than other poly finishes I've seen. Maybe it's the sheen. I did have to do about 8 coats before it looked even, though. This was new jatoba wood, which I think is pretty hard and the grain wasn't all that open. I just got around to stripping and sanding a Drexel Profile lamp table that I've had for a few years. The finish was completely trashed and the thing had also been sitting in a garage, I think. The top had all kinds of dirty scuzz on it a ... | |||||

| I still think they're Knoll. The new photos show pretty clearly that the sloppy welds are only around the mounting area and at the edge of the seat -- the spots where welds typically break and need to be repaired. I think Harry Bertoia would've disliked the ugly seat-mounting rail as much as Woofwoof does... So I think it's reasonable to assume that his original design didn't have the rail, and that it was added later by Knoll. The mounting system shown in the OP's photos looks much nicer, doesn't it? And it also looks expensive and harder to attach than th ... | |||||

| BryanCapps No worries, my man. I didn't start this thread to complain. Rather to further the discussion about whether or not to make a separate section for IDs because they are so prevalent. You are not the irritant at all. When it's a bother it is when people are obviously using it to promote their ebay auctions or to use our "experts" rather than do a little googling to make money quick. Not that making money/selling things is bad, it just gets tiresome to the ones wanting to simply discuss design. It has the tendency to take over the board for the sake of ... | |||||

You say that I make no effort to inform myself, but as a newcomer, I do not have all the resources at my disposal. Having made a request for reading material so that I would not have to ask for IDs the first response I got was to go read a porno mag. This was unprovoked and not appropriate in any context, and something not comparable to anything I've posted. I'm glad that you are making i ...
| Maybe not fake. | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | fastfwd | General discussion | |
| Maybe not fake. Didn't the mounting method change partway through the long production history of these chairs? The modern chairs have a flat bar (or maybe it's U-shaped; I'm not at home to check) welded to the seat, but maybe the older ones didn't. Also, the closeup photos are of the edge and the mounting area -- which are the two places where welds typically break and are repaired, so I'm not at all surprised to see wavyness and less-than-perfect welds in those areas. I'm inclined to go with Whitespike here, and vote for real... Although I'd change my vote ... | |||||
