| I once wrote to Wyeth about... I once wrote to Wyeth about a Hans Wegner daybed/sofa they had for sale, that I'd never seen before. It wasn't 'signed' so I was curious how they knew it was Wegner. They never answered. I suspect they didn't really know for certain. | |||||

| Following on.... The benefits for the planet from re-using our designer objects are many. The famous chair designer Grant Featherston, according to his wife Mary, stopped making chairs because he thought the world didn't need anymore. Almost every item in our place is secondhand, dishes, cutlery, furniture and even the t.v. With so much great vintage design to choose from it seems crazy not to recycle. Better for the environment and a great way of preserving our design history. | |||||
| My sympathies on the loss of your father | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | Hineybutt | General discussion | |
| My sympathies on the loss of your father I have just discovered your fathers work in Renoir & Matisse copper jewelry. I am not an artist whatsoever, but instantly fell in love with Jerry Fels design. I have just purchased Renoir leaf pattern necklace, bracelet and earring set. I love this more than any other piece of jewelry, except of course for my wedding ring. I am glad to hear, he lead a full and rewarding life, and including the heartfelt message from his son. I didn't even know my father and would of loved to have had one period especially one I co ... | |||||

| ... by Cara Greenberg * Modern Furniture Designs from Schiffer * McCobb's directional catalog reprint from Schiffer It surely helped me identify good pieces and then I went shopping at eBay! I had some knowledge from a late friend who bought and sold MCM. I have always had a preference for George Nelson Associates' designs, and I decided that I would stay away from the 5 or 6 iconic 'stereotype' pieces; Eames Lounge 670/671 (mostly because I didn't want a swivel lounge chair), Noguchi coffee table, etc. Since I didn't have a clear decorator-type plan, I found ... | |||||

| That is soooooooooooo... That is soooooooooooo disgusting! I LOVE white shag. Love it. Want it. Won't buy it. It just isn't practical unless you want to spend a good deal of time cleaning it. For functional purposes I champion very low pile rugs. Mine is just a solid dark red made of nylon loops. Yes, I still want a white shag rug. But hopefully I can keep myself from giving in. They look so good!! The house I rented before we built this one had wall to wall carpet. It's pretty hard to find good hardwood in Austin. You can get concrete if you live downtown i ... | |||||
| Who pays retail? | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | fastfwd | General discussion | |
| Who pays retail? I don't know anyone who does... When I had to do an inventory for insurance purposes, I discovered that on average I'd paid 35% of retail for my collection of new and vintage furniture. Ark says he pays even less -- something like 25% -- and it seems from his posts that most of what he buys is new. I'm sure that former dealers like Riki do even better than that at antique fairs and design markets, and of course the current dealers get the best deals of all (if you ignore the other costs of running a business, anyway). I agree with you, Dav ... | |||||
| In my opinion | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| In my opinion well designed furniture - usually by designers with an architecture background - is usually well made too. When my dad died and some money started coming my way, I decided to assemble some nicely made, designer pieces, instead of the poor condition stuff found in junk stores and a few select nice pieces. I spent the money to buy books on Herman Miller, Knoll, McCobb and other American designers, because that's where my interest lies. I started assembling pieces I liked without any real overall decorating plan...and lo and behold, all of the st ... | |||||

| ... possessions are more important than the life you live with them. I like well designed things and I try hard not to buy things that are poorly made and disposable. But, I'd feel like my life was less well enjoyed if I didn't have some things in my life of dubious provenance. I bought them cuz I liked them not cuz of who designed them! | |||||

| Mario Looks like the stamped steel brackets just provide support to the existing aluminum brackets. The part I am looking for is the top piece, 12.5" lon section of AL extrusion with the mounting brackets @ each end. If you have an extra you would part with please email me @ mik_phil@yahoo.com @norm- I did cut down my 4 poles and in the process of creating end mounts for these. But, I purchased 3 more poles and one of them is in need of another wall bracket. I did see the ebay auction but at the time didn't have a need for them. | |||||

| Of course, funny n hilarious... Of course, funny n hilarious to me too. william-holden-caulfield: Great commercial. I didn't saw it. And great cause also share some points. Could have different readings, and different sensations. Afraid to be misunderstood, but that's the feeling. Could also be seen a bit off topic, at some point. Also thought the same. But I find too much design on those commercials -sound, objects, colors, ideas, concepts, etc, etc- that in some object somebody find in the garbage or on eBay... 😉 Don't be afraid, here I find some design: ... | |||||
| I just couldn't do it | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| I just couldn't do it I was on the fence but I really decided that I would find it trite after a bit because it's such an overexposed design. That was my whole original dilemma, it's lovely, but it's expensive and it's everywhere. I didn't want to spend a lot for something I could very potentially tire of quickly. So I got something inexpensive and something I could modify myself if I want to reinvent it. I got this, from CB2, it's called the Paperclip table and it reminds me of a lot of MCM shapes. The top is just veneered MDF but the metal legs are quite s ... | |||||

| Dang Went and looked and apparently I wasn't the first to show interested, so they looked it up and are now taking offers! Not that I'm suprised, it's in the middle of Chicago so there are plenty of mcm nuts around. The best offer so far was $850, so I didn't even offer anything. The rubber seats are in great shape, but the leather back strips are ripped thru. One end leather section is in great shape, but the other has torn from the tubing in a 6inch section, so that would be tricky to re-do. It's actually at a firehouse sitting in the garage believe it or ... | |||||
