| OK GlassArtist... I thought I was just taking your points to their "illogical conclusion". I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. Sorry if I was too blunt. (Hey, dont you think Chiluly is ridiculously Vegas? Being a glass guy, how does it feel to have THAT as the standard bearer coffee table book guy in your field?) | |||||

| I can add this: Architects, many of them (generations, sects, disciplines, etc, TBD), opt out -- they don't see their discipline as art. This surprises me. Alexander Calder reportedly didn't call his work "art." This also surprises me, though not so much. So, there are mysteries surrounding this subject. I've heard it said that a true artist -- albeit a humble one -- doesn't call himself that; he leaves that judgement to others. Would that all of us could be so modest . . . ! | |||||

| luciferSum, the photo?? Now Im dying to see the photo of the Kelly wall sculptures LuciferSum. I think the thing went haywire and the link didn't work or something. Kelly is sometimes hard to get, I agree. Good of you to hang in and try to figure em out though. Sounds kind of like the extra half hour didn't help any though huh? | |||||

| No, tktoo... As I said, it's still nothing more than a stand. And I'm still not crazy about it. And my point about the masses didn't counter my creator comment at all. There is reality and then there are people's conceptions of reality, whether it be creator or appreciator. | |||||

| ... to comment on Noguchi. That doesn't mean I can't have an opinion or a reaction. Yes, art is a subject, like any other, that requires significant time and effort to understand. But, for me, right now, it's subjective. The fact that I'm engaged in this forum authenticates my interest to learn. I have questions boiling up in my jarhead. I have an interest in learning, I am allowed to have an opinion and a reaction to art, and im allowed to ask questions no matter what my art education level is. But thanks for the public "bitch slap" anyway. I suspect this ... | |||||

| Having read all of the above comments... I wonder, didn't we have this same discussion regarding Nakashima just a few years ago? Just about the time the Arlen table sold for 30 mil. Anyway, last week I was wandering through the MFA and stumbled onto an exhibit of Ellsworth Kelly wall sculptures (photo below). Various people wandered into the space and almost immediately walked out. I stayed for half an hour, not becuase I particularly liked the work, but because I could not for the life of me figure it out. Who am I to simply dismiss things that I don't ... | |||||

| I wonder what percentage of... I wonder what percentage of our income we or our governments spent on things we didn't need this year? For the firewood lovers, when it was made do you think Noguchi gave no consideration to it? When an artist creates something do you think he finds the cheapest and most utilitarian framer he can find in the phone book, maybe he goes to Ikea? If you are given a bunch of flowers do you just put them in any old vase and when you look at a painting is paint the only thing you see? | |||||

He said that often these chairs will be significantly cheaper than HM or Vitra on the 2nd hand market, as people assume them to be fakes, but THEY WERE authorised to make them when they did. He said that the many companies who were making authorised versions had the plug pulled on them however when Vitra went into am exclusive deal with HM to be the sole non-US dealer. Now as you can imagine, that kind of exclusivity costs a lot, and some of that is MUST be ... | |||||

| A round one to go with the square one. I really like my square (model 4950) Nelson tray table, but I didn't know about the round one until the Herman Miller Select reissue with its busy new inlaid top was announced back in July. Started looking for a plain vintage example back then, but it took a while to find the right one: http://www.designaddict.com/design_addict/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/th... | |||||
