| The last thing you acquired part 2 | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | HPau | General discussion | |
| Herpes, just kidding. The first one was taking ages to load. Rarely go to thrift shops these days but had to go into town so checked one out. An excellent little piece of woodturning, Tasmanian myrtle, concave base, no chuck marks and shallow with a thin edge. Very pleasing and humble, a slide rule in a well designed plastic case with an alteration by a no doubt bored volunteer and a pink glitter ducati T shirt, gay Italian bikers of the world unite and take over. All for $3.50! Keep on drooling. | |||||
| French Posters, my new thing | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Riki | General discussion | |
| I am having a current small love affair with French school posters and maps from the 50's and 60's as wall decor. In the US, I have only seen reproductions, but over here in Europe, they are thick on the ground. Most have small tears around the edges; many times they have finger smudges and other markings but I just love the graphics. They are incredibly politically incorrect, but I think they are hilarious. Tell me, love or hate? Here are a few that I have picked up in the last few months. The printing is probably too small to read, but the funniest one is the Eskimos. The title of the poster is "Dan Les Pays Froids", which means "In the Cold Countries". On the opposite side of that one is a picture of "Les Tropicaux" or the Tropics, but I'm afraid to post a photo because Al Sharpton will be after me. | |||||

| Lightning is an amazing thing... | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Hi All...I've been out of touch for a bit as my house was struck by lightning and we've been getting on with repairs. It was a direct hit that damaged the house and took out nearly everything electrical. There was no fire, so we were lucky...just some damage to fix and a lot of new appliances to buy. No one was hurt although my hubby was here at the time and actually felt the strike in his body...totally freaked him out! I write this here for you all because, I have been truly amazed at the amount of destruction a lightning bolt can cause and I'm hoping that you can all learn from my experience! Being that I'm married to a major engineering geeks, we had our computers on surge protectors and we had a lightning arrestor installed. We thought that would be enough protection! We found out otherwise. Mother Nature scoffed at our puny attempts and the lightning blew right through the lightning arrestor and the surge protectors. It blew out things that were battery operated for heavens sake! We lost nearly 100% of the things in our house that require power to operate. So, if you have electrical things you love and you live in an area prone to thunderstorms and haven't been where I currently am on this, my suggestion is go get surge protection and be redundant with it! The things that lived through it all at my house had two layers of protection such as being plugged into a GFCI outlet or on a power strip that was plugged into a surge protector. Oh, and filing a homeowners insurance claim is less fun that doing your taxes! 🙁 Truly worth avoiding! | |||||
| What is the best thing you have ever passed up not knowing? | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | pee_king | General discussion | |
| When reading this forum I notice the threads about your best find. However; I haven't noticed any addressing the best item passed up that you will always regret not buying.I am really curious about this ,because this has happened to me a few times now. Then one day going through a book ,or something I happen to spot the very same piece I passed by. A couple of things off the top of my head to give as an example of are an Ico Parisi desk for MIM Roma for $600 ,and an Arne Jacobsen desk for Asko for $40.There have been others as well ,but these ones just stick out to me.Anyways; I hope to see I am not the only one this happens to.Oh yeah I forgot a number of years ago now I passed up a large Natzler vase for $20 lol ,and my wife passed by two mint Zanuso lady chairs about five years ago that were only $60 for the pair. | |||||

| Please help identify this coat hanger thing. | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | Neil Puls | Identification | |
| These came out of a high school here in Nebraska that was built in the 1950's. The building is getting ready to be demolished and I picked these up at the surplus auction. I have 6 of them and they do need some cleaning up as they have some paint from when the rooms were painted later on. This example has both coat hangers on it, but I only have 5 hangers. I was hoping to find out a possible designer of these and also where I might find more coat hangers that would match. As far as I can tell they are solid Aluminium for the metal pieces with a single screw for each of the hangers. | |||||
| A Sad thing indeed - Cleaning painted brick | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | waffle | General discussion | |
| A question for the DA groupthink. I have a 1949 ranch that I am in the process of painting. It has really nice narrow brick details WHICH ARE PAINTED (not by me, I swear it). Question - Is it possible to get the paint off? Has anyone tried, with a fireplace, etc? I asked a painter who is a neighbor and he said "tear it down...". I'm willing to go Non Green here. Damn the environment. | |||||

| I broke my favourite lamp...... and it was a good thing! | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | mafbail | General discussion | |
| Whilst cleaning up I knocked my favourite table lamp off its perch and when it hit the ground it made a sound that said broken! Luckily, when I examined it, I was relieved to find the only broken part was the fugly plastic lamp holder. ...Which led me to realize that the lamp holder was not original; underneath was a nice brass screw thread indicating that the original lamp holder was likely also brass. The general build quality of the lamp is good, the wood looks like teak and the appearance of the white plastic lampholder always looked out of place. So, my questions to all fine and knowledgeable forum members are: Does anyone know the original type of lampholder fitted to this lamp? Even better, does anyone know who manufactured or designed this item? Can anyone confirm the wood used in the lamp? The colour looks like teak but I am not 100% sure of the grain pattern. Also, the base looks the same colour as the top when viewed from one angle, but rotate the lamp 90 degrees and it looks much darker as can be seen in the photographs below. I absoloutely love this lamp and doubt I will ever find a table lamp that I would like to replace it with, I just wish I knew more about it. I hope you guys like it, but please share your opinions even if you do not. | |||||
