| Okay. So I contacted Herman... Okay. So I contacted Herman Miller who basically told me I should go to an antique dealer and they don't have any records. Sent me a list of what previous employees remember but to be honest after trawling images of shell chairs with date stamps alot of that didn't bear true. The latest manufacture of Cincinatti shell that I have seen is dated 1977 but I am sure they go up to at least 1984. | |||||

| and lets not forget the stamps... such as the round stamped "Summit Prime", "AX", the big "Z", etc, and date stamped chairs with the actual day of the year... (often on the paper label chairs from 57 onward) AND numerous other embossed marks I didn't mention earlier, like the rare small backwards "Z" (or zig-zaggy "S") in the center of those three small dots sometimes... and the embossed "cartoon flame"... But much of this stuff makes little or no difference in value... at least YET. Color can make a huge difference in price, and of course condition. I gues ... | |||||

| Thanks again i *love* stuff like that. It'd be fantastic to see more of this sort of stuff from other manufacturers too; I know Alessi produced a book of items that didn't make it past the prototype stage (below) and I used to see catalogues when I worked in furniture in the 90s that pictured items that never actually got produced for sale (e.g. a Konstantin Grcic sofa called Pasha from c. 1994). If I can dig out pics, I'll post 'em. Any more similar stories? http://www.alessi.com/en/pressarea/pubblicazioni#dettaglio | |||||

| faux pas... Nope I didn't buy your lamp, I just stole your picture! It was the best looking example in all the searching I did, you have a great shop! I researched 'Sight Light', M.G. Wheeler was the designer. I don't think ours are one of them, it feels too new and all the ones I saw had that base with an up right lamp or the saucer top on the flat base. It remains a stylish mystery. | |||||

| The aluminum lounge looks to... The aluminum lounge looks to be very new and in very good shape. did you just buy it from the seller because you didn't get what you went there for or had you been looking for that to begin with? How's the comfort of it? | |||||

| ... too fussy. There are others... I would avoid any vintage Reff systems unless you really like the look . Reff was a Canadian company bought by Knoll in the 90's. Very common and easily found in our neck of the woods. They are often on the local CL with always too high asking prices. Average quality and clunky, uninspired components. You'll know it to see them. U shaped shelves and wood veneered metal wall standards. In the u.k they have Ladderax. Nils Strinning string system is terrific looking, I've only ever come across one big vintage string system on a ... | |||||

What I didn't reveal was that the image I scanned appeared on page 71 of "Arts & Architecture - the Entenza years," edited by Barbara Goldstein and Esther McCoy and published in 1990 by the MIT Press. You could find this book on the Web, I should think. It's a hoot for any modernism fan . . .
| The chair | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | kcbrains | General discussion | |
| The chair was elephant grey. The stripper is pretty mild. I also used it to remove brown paint from inside a lotte lamp shade which is a thin white fiberglass like material. There was no transfer of color and it didn't melt or degrade the thin fiberglass. Also, I know from experience 🙁 the exposed fibers and the shell itself will take on the paint colour if you use conventional stripper. Even at very short intervals, with minimal product. Don't do it. | |||||

| experiments Interesting... After your post, I made 3 experiments: 1/ a cabinet suffered slight discoloration spots after some rain drops came by the window. A slight coat of linseed oil brought the cabinet back to its even color. 2/ Tried a blo/ms/paint mix over the wax finish of my test shelf. Wood wouldn't drink any of it. Just bubbles on the surface. 3/ Succeeded to mix my own purple tinted wax. But applying didn't make any color change. I guess the wood is oversaturated with all the previous coatings. So wax seems to be a barrier to more wax. | |||||

| ... really expecting to hear back... Instead, I got the following response the same day (excerpts): "What a lovely chair. Thanks for sharing your photos. Your chair is indeed an Evans example, probably made between 1947 and 1949, the year in which Herman Miller took over production. I'm not surprised to see some deviations from the design standards set by Charles and Ray Eames in a chair made so early in the production history of this design. In fact, as an Eames collector myself, for many years (since 1987) I have come to realize that collectors prize "less g ... | |||||

I have two spare open spaces in my living room - approximately 60" wide, on either side of the fireplace. So, a credenza would be nice and I'm also thinking of a wall unit. I like the Cado ones. Unless you have any other recommendations to look at? I'm inspired, I'm going to sell a big, painted Ontario flat-to-the-wall cupboard to make MORE space! Ironically, my whole plan is to minimize! 🙂 I went to two church sales yesterday and ...

| Just stunning, Amazake. And so timely having this sweet set of china for future holiday dinner party's. I like that pattern real well. Best, Aunt Mark ps all food tastes best when served on/in a white dish. (edited to sheepishly admit that I didn't see the top black/white china, at first. I really like the white pattern. What would I wear whilst sipping from such a refined cup?). I like white china. | |||||

| . Maybe Kurt Østervig, bigger pics with details would be helpful. Enso-Gutzeit is a Finnish pulp and paper company and I'm pretty sure they didn't manufacture furnitures, it's just a label of the wood producer. By the way the company's headquarter in Helsinki is made by Alvar Aalto, but first this is off-topic and second he designed better buildings. | |||||
