Wow, that brings back | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | fastfwd | General discussion
Wow, that brings back memories, tktoo. I had one just like that at around the same time in my life, although I didn't treat it very well -- first one of the scales broke (my dad molded a resin replacement) and then a couple years later the latch wore out and would no longer hold the blade closed. Oh well. Here's the pocket knife I've been carrying for the last ten years: Spyderco's Caly 3, designed by Sal Glesser. Scales are carbon fiber, blade is ZDP-189 laminated between two sheets of 420J2. The knife opens one-handed, quicker than an automatic, and can ...

... frame, they will disappear with oiling. A mat cutter blade is ideal but anything like that will do. A box cutter blade might be good (not in the knife, though). Leif, have you redone these in leather? I know the cardboard backs were originally glued on but my first attempt at that was such a horrible experience that I gave up and have been sewing them on ever since. I used contact cement and brushed it on to both surfaces but that stuff is so viscous and goopy that it ended up getting where i didn't want it to, even though I was being super careful! last one for now-- | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
last one for now-- I got these two awhile back---thought the dude was a Hans Bølling but wasn't 100% sure the duck was, but mostly I thought they'd be a fun project and they didn't cost much so who cares. Turns out both are knockoffs. The Stritt guy is by Zooline and the most obvious difference is the shape of the ears. The rest is almost exactly the same (slightly longer torso) (ok, no red hair ever on the originals but I wasn't sure about that at first). I put new shearling wool hair on him and made new feet out of birch half-eggs from a crafts supplie ...
Hello | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Sarah Wilson | General discussion
Hello Sorry not to thank you for your thoughts earlier; for some reason I didn't receive an email alert that anyone had posted a comment! I suppose another explanation could be that as a lot of people use internet images to attribute designs, if the original image and attribution are incorrect then the myth perpetuates itself until someone refers to an original design manual or catalogue? Thank you Sarah

Good morning Howard Moon and Mark! EDIT: And good morning spanky! Funny I thought it was about the one I missed… I had to curtail my own responses on that previous thread also. didn't do a very good job of it though. (Although I never mind exacerbating things, it was still difficult to choose words.)
Hey Ken, | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | racecar | General discussion
Hey Ken, I've successfully used raw tung oil (Enviro-Magic brand) on a cutting board, doing the same method you describe. Because it was a cutting board I didn't cut it with mineral spirits as a lot of woodworkers suggest. Just wiped on a coat, let it soak in for 20 minutes, wiped off excess, and let it cure for a few days and then buffed it with #0000 steel wool. Repeated that about 5 times. If the steel wool was gummy, I let it cure longer. The protection was really amazing. Red wine spills overnight on the board just wiped right up the next morning. I tri ...

... but as I said, I'm new to this lark. I'm learning more every day but there's so much to know that I'm glad there are places like this where much more knowledgable folk hang out. It's great having keen people to chat with. I'd assumed that they were made by different makers because they are subtly different and I didn't think anybody would make two products that were fundamentally the same - material quality aside. Etsy, eBay, Pinterest and even gumtree are my first pass research points for finding similar items, but to find anything other than somebody else ...
I would clean any grime off | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
I would clean any grime off with whatever cleaning agent is appropriate for the finish, then go from there. Leif, where are you getting mattress toppers that are cheaper per cubic inch than foam by the slab? I researched that a few years ago and didn't find much price difference at all. I bought one anyway and it was such a soft density that I couldn't really use it for any furniture padding. It's still sitting around! I don't think it was advertised as soft density, I think the seller just didn't know anything about foam and was just using buzzwords tha ...

Wish I could say "Great minds | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | william swift | General discussion
Wish I could say "Great minds blah blah ..." But when it comes to Danish furniture, mine is feeble in comparison. I am more cynical about the paper tag placement the more I think about it. When I acquire a mystery piece, I can't wait to dig in to it looking for tags, markings, etc. Why wouldn't the seller peek under it? If it had the right markings, it could be confidently sold as a Wegner design rather than a "Denmark" chair. Maybe they did peek and didn't like what they saw?

Thank you for your reply ! I really appreciate it. I apologize for any rudeness that may have come across from myself. I honestly didn't mean for that to come across - I'm just not a furniture person but obviously I respect what you guys do, and what you have done for me. So thank you very much for helping me and again, sorry for any disrespect that you guys felt.

Thanks for the help! Leif, I think my question was the same as your question. 'Does the Lande label signify that Pearsall didn't make it?' Thanks cdsilva for reaching out and being helpful. The cool thing is that Pearsall stuff seems to not matter as much, in terms of value, if it has a label or not. People just like the Pearsall look/style. And this one is particularly well made. As a reseller, I am happy to have it. Thanks again!
I dyed a couple of HG boxes | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
I dyed a couple of HG boxes and shelves. The first step was to remove the old oil finish, which I did with alcohol and I think fine steel wool. It came off easily and quickly. It also left the wood very dry but re-oiling after dyeing fixed that. Getting the dye to match the old teak of the rest of the pieces in the wall unit was very hard. The finished pieces were all brighter and more intense than the old stuff but not to the point where it bugged me. It is now a couple of years later and either the dye color has evened out or I'm just used to it. But ...
I've seen old Wishbones | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
I've seen old Wishbones without that odd strand in front. I don't know what it's there for either. I don't like it---I think because I spent SO much time on the first seat I ever did like this trying to figure out how to get that perfectly clean triangle of blank space. I was not doing the wraps correctly and kept getting one lone strand cutting across one long side of the triangle right near the edge of it and it bugged the hell out of me. The lone strand in the old Wishbones (and maybe new ones, I don't know--I only work on old ones!) doesn't intrude o ... |
