My pleasure. Yes, 1971 but that doesn't mean it didn't appear in an earlier catalogue. Pic of my wall clock that I am looking for the siblings of.

The easiest way to figure out | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
The easiest way to figure out the market value of something is to look at Ebay sales---just make sure you look at stuff that has actually sold, not that is currently listed or listings that have ended but didn't sell. You may need to do this over a period of months to get the most accurate picture since there are often flukey highs and lows. I don't think there's a way to see sold prices on Etsy listings. You should also not put a lot of stock into 1stDibs prices since their target market is not the general public.
If the foam has deteriorated | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
... in to orangey-yellow sand that gets all over everything. It cannot be revived once this happens. It also doesn't compress, if that's what you mean--not the way urethane foam does from someone sitting on the same end of the sofa for years. It's way more resilient than urethane foam, which is why it's so comfortable. I recommend this out-of-print book (but still easy to find) on upholstering---very clear drawings and instructions, very well organized and easy to follow. I learned the craft from it a long time ago and still refer to it when i get some weir ...
I would get a few new slate | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
I would get a few new slate tiles and see what different strippers do to the slate. It's very porous (which is why it feels so good on bare feet) so citrus-based strippers might not be good because I think they have oil in them? I'm not sure. My daughter's floor is not slate but flagstone, which is a harder rock. She has a young kid and didn't want me to use anything that would leave fumes in the air for long---I think it was winter so windows couldn't be left open? I tried this stuff and it worked pretty well- http://liftoffinc.com/spray-paint-graffiti ...
It's not the worst thing in | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
... story will make you feel better. Years ago when I was still kind of new to upholstering, I got a great 60s sofa to redo for myself. At that time it was still pretty hard to find really good quality MCM fabrics at a discount and I could not afford to pay full price. I settled for a neutral chenille in the local fabric store. Mistake #1. I didn't have a pneumatic stapler and compressor at the time and was still using tacks and a tack hammer---which, nothing wrong with that but it does add a LOT of time. I decided to take some other shortcuts to make up f ...
The google image search | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
The google image search turned up a lot of red chairs! The closest thing I could find is this Thonet chair from the 30s, but then after looking at a ton of Thonet chairs from that era I did not see a variation like the one above. Even with a search of the word stahlrohrmobel ("tubular steel furniture") it didn't show up though I confess I didn't look through all bazillion search results. Stahlruhlstuhl didn't help either, but again, I didn't look at all the results.

I've moved twice with a Noguchi table. Both moves were about 150 miles (not quite cross country). I didn't trust putting the glass in a moving truck. I wrapped it it blankets and put it in my trunk. I want a Saarinen marble dining table but I'm sticking with my ikea knock off until I'm sure I won't move again.

I have never actually had the pleasure of disassembling one of these with the original upholstery. Only ones poorly redone. So I've always just hand stitched the backs on there. (They had been redone with the metal toothed fold over flex strips, not sure of the proper name). In my case I did not use any cardboard as I didn't know, just a bit of cotton batting underneath and stitched the back on. Leather would be harder to hand stitch, but I've been upholstering a lot in leather lately, and it really is not so hard to work with, and the result is very worth ...
Thanks again to everyone for | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | pardicity | General discussion
Thanks again to everyone for their help and comments! Especially fastfwd and Mark. The unit is finally back to being fully assembled and I thought you all might be interested in how it looks. You can see I left the lower doors off... they are significantly damaged (see the photos) and I did not want to risk more damage reinstalling them. I also included a photo of the cut out notch from the lower shelf. It's a shame the previous owner didn't take greater precaution with the unit, but I suppose if they had I probably wouldn't be the new owner!
Hello guys & gals, | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Peruche | General discussion
Hello guys & gals, I know it has been a while.... 1950s Karpen of California lounge chairs.... Found these beauties the other day on Craigslist. Bought them from the son of the original owners. The guys Father had them reupholstered one time during their life but didn't have the wood refinished or the brass sabots & brass accent pieces on the hand rests polished back to life. They are in desperate need of refurbishment, but the bones are all there for her rebirth. The guy/son that owned them had hired a so called professional interior designer who was t ...
Very nice! | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
... gotten a lot of pale brown stains from I guess drips of water that I didn't notice that sat too long. It is waterproof but you still have to be super careful about drying it if there are drips. Also, the first week I had it, I was mixing up some TSP in the sink in preparation for cleaning the slate floor prior to sealing, and a single drop got onto the counter and stripped the Waterlox off completely. Someday, if I ever get around to it, I will strip the counters completely and just put mineral oil on them. Lots of people love it, though. Just not me. |
