| The design of sound | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| After about 18 years our Harmon Kardon receiver and CD player are both going belly up. The CD player has been lsing it for years but we didn't care all that much cuz we were using our digital units most of the time. Now the receiver is on its last legs as well. So I wanted to ask for advice from the DA crowd. I figure at least a few of you are audiophiles as well as furniture-hounds! Here's what we want... Not interested in the TV surround sound set ups. Just want a stereo receiver. Are thinking we want a built in amp as we still have vinyl to convert to dig ... | |||||

| All of you are so knowledgeable on Mid-Century Design. Even though I have a Degree in Art Design and work in the arts, I know nothing about what is what in the furniture design world. I am a child of the 50's, grew up with Haywood Wakefield in the Living Room and dining Room and Danish Modern in the "rec room" - the former still sits in my original home that my sib lives in and he could care less (along with lots of other mid stuff down the basement that I beg him not to throw away - I just like it all!) After years of floundering with my own style likes, ... | |||||

The copies i've seen are almost not to tell form the real thing, i've seen them side by side, had my pictures with me to compare, but some replica's really are just like it should be (according to my eyes at least). If it's illegal for other company's than vitra. to sell the chair, why can they just advertise without problems, even regular shops sell these chair, with warranty and all? I don't understand, if it's illegal it should be easy to make tehm stop selling the product you are the only rightfull lic ...

| ... all point down and provide specific localized lighting. I do have a large Bubble cigar lamp, but I use it as a timed night light, flipping on around 5:30PM and going off at 1:30AM. It only provides atmospheric light, really. My first choice would be a tall lighted column that not only provide torchiere-like light upwards, but also illuminates horizonally. there's lots of expensive choice from Flos and Artemide, but 1) I can't view them here in Minneapolis, and 2) they're all so darn expensive. I diD see the Elise column lamp at Design Within Reach, but it ... | |||||

I usually only mention my design obsession to kindred sprits; and so, when the uninitiated arrive they don?t know what to look at first. I sometimes think they are just shocked that our sofa and chair(s) (and chairs?) didn?t come as a set. I generally tell them I like to sit a-la-carte. I am excited that a mainstream publication quotes Don Chadwick and cites his Aeron ...

| Hi Zephyr, so now you can joke around with people all you like as long as they break one of the rules? So who besides you and leif knows that it was a joke? I didn't and perhaps more people thought it was odd that two "experts" like you recommended using it as firewood. | |||||

| Hello About a year ago I inquired on this forum about some dining chairs I have.I had photos ,and asked the question Parisi or Ulrich.Anyways; at that time I didn't obtain a response ,but finally I have confirmed they are Guglielmo Ulrich. Moreover: I am now considering selling the eight ,and would like to know in your opinion what the best venue to sell them would be.Also; what would a decent price be for a set of chairs like this. I don't want to place photos of the again on the web ,and dirty the product.I am including a photo from a book with the style ch ... | |||||
| What's your biggest regret? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Gordrann | General discussion | |
| I gave away a Grete Jalk coffee table I inherited from my family because I thought I needed to establish my own collection, and I didn't know how to properly clean it. Dumb. Now I want it back, but can only hope the people who have it appreciate it. I also saw a small Jalk table in an office once, with a big old computer printer sitting on it. I wish I could have liberated it then, ethics be damned! I saw my family's Saarinen table and 4 Eames bucket chairs left outside to rot over a Wisconsin winter, because the dopes who had them thought they were deck ... | |||||
| Recover Eames 670/671 lounge or buy new? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Fungus Mungus (USA) | General discussion | |
| I have a 670/671 set that I bought that had already been reupholstered by somebody that didn't know what they were doing. This is the older late 50s-early 60s style with the 2 round clips rather than the 4 rectangular clips. The cushions are down. The problem is that the leather they used is a thicker pebbled leather rather than the smooth glove leather originally used for these chairs. I think the thickness of the leather has thrown off the measurements, so now the cushions don't fit properly in the shells. They slide in, but they're a real bear to get hoo ... | |||||

The colors and shape caught my eye and it wasn't until later when I got home that the name rang a bell as being associated with Henry Miller. I did find a nice website that had quite a bit of history about this line but it didn't get into the current popularity at all. Thanks in advance for any advice!

This particular desk fascinates me, because it is more busy that some of his designs and yet it seems the added business is necessary to get the anti-gravity effect. When I do a thought experiment and imagine taking away any part of the business, the table looks heavier in my minds eye. It sits heavier on the floor. discovering Wegner through DA has been one of the great joys of my middle age. Thank you DA. P.S.: yes, I know, I should have known about him long ago, but ...

| Hey JuanEarl Did you pick up the thin edge dresser? Cuz if you didn't lead me to it. You're right the legs are off and the couple of knobs are non HM replacements. I can't tell but the legs may be HM or not. The walnut case however is dynamite, and to paraphrase PegBoard's words....it's better to regret what you acquired than to regret what you didn't. Tell me please you bought it, and share pics. | |||||
| Tktoo, I like the tire | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Zephyr | General discussion | |
| Tktoo, I like the tire suggestion. It just so happens that I have access to all of the free bicycle tubes I could ever want, so at a minimum, they could be used for non-slip once the talc is washed off.... didn't even think of that. Such great suggestions here, really helping me come up with a plan of attack. | |||||
