| ... out at the bucket seat hiding in a pile in a corner. I hurried over and at first i was a little disappointed that they were not eames chairs, but as i took a closer look, i realized they were like nothing i had ever seen before. I asked the gentleman who was sizing me up, how much they were, and he said 'i got 4 of em, but they aren't originals, you want em all? You can have em all for 10 bucks.' I snapped them up and took them home. I searched online a little, but could not find any chairs that matched and i did not give it much more thought. I had conside ... | |||||
| Eames Elliptical Table: Herman Miller or replica? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | demp945 | General discussion | |
| ... me question the authenticity is the Herman Miller medallion. It appears that it has been pried off of a different piece and then attached (with superglue?) to this piece. See the photo and judge for yourself. I can't think of why this would have been done. Aside from the medallion, is there any way of ascertaining the authenticity of an elliptical table? The width dimension is a little bit off of what is listed on Herman Miller's website... The reproduction tables that I've seen are the smaller Vitra-exclusive Euro-dimensioned size whereas this is the 89-in ... | |||||
| Are historical furniture manufacturers anti-vintage? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Brent | General discussion | |
| My impression is that the Heywood-Wakefield doesn't embrace vintage HW collectors. The company, for example, doesn't sell any of its original finishes (only one called 'Amber'). When I once called to inquire about a replacement part for my vintage HW 'Kohinoor' bed, the rep I spoke to told me the best choice I could make would be to buy a new--meaning not vintage--HW bed. He didn't at all seem to understand the special pleasure of owning a vintage piece. (I found the piece, btw, and my beautiful Kohinoor is perfect.) | |||||
| ID needed: This a "sputnik" light? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Entropy-0 | Identification | |
| I bought this 8-armed chandelier yesterday (for $60) from a local seller, selling it as a "sputnik" ceiling lamp. Thought it would nicely tie together a few chrome-accented pieces of furniture that I have. My research on sputnik lamps however, didn't turn up anything that look like this one. The arms usually extend out at an angle, porcupine-style. I'm trying to figure out if this is from the 60's, or as my GF seems to think, if its an 80's style light fixture. Any clues as to its origins? (If it helps, its fairly heavy, so the quality is there). | |||||

| refinishing knoll marble table (transparent polyester coating). | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| ... owned it, but the coating is beginning to bubble up and crack in a few places. Where this happens, it becomes opaque. Knoll was not particularly helpful when I called them with this question. Perhaps they would prefer that we just buy a new table, or maybe I didn't reach the right person. In any event, hope someone here has a thought. Since the finish is a big part of the attraction of the table, I'd like to find someone who can remove the old coating and apply a new one. | |||||
| Hallingdal fabric for primary sofa? Is it comfortable? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | DariusNYC | General discussion | |
| I'm leaning towards purchasing the Climate sofa, made by Dune, as the main sofa for our living room. (If you're not familiar with it, it's in an updated version of a Florence Knoll-y style but with more comfortable dimensions for lounging.) I have looked at a lot of fabrics and my favorite looks-wise, when combined with consideration of its perceived durability, is the famous Hallingdal from Kvadrat. I have a dog who does not stay off the furniture, and a 6-month old son, so durability is important to me. My mother-in-law, who is in the trade and so is our ... | |||||
| We updated our 1956 bathroom just a bit | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| So. Two years ago I bought five 3x8 foot kitchen cabinet cover panels in the AS IS department of IKEA. They were the Nexus Yellow-Brown line, which is oak veneer stained to look remarkably like old teak. I didn't have any immediate plans for them but I knew that I'd think of something. They were $10 each, normally $120. No damage to speak of. Meanwhile, we had this half bath that was hideous when we moved in (pale peach painted barnsiding-textured wainscoting!) and that we gutted gradually over a few years as we had time and energy. It has been out of ... | |||||

| mystery house | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | HP | General discussion | |
| I am trying to find the details of a house I saw in a few magazines once. I think it was a weekender built for the architects parents....it was a very small corrugated iron room with a pitched roof, small or no eaves + with one large door which opened onto a timber deck which had an outdoor fireplace built through it, the whole thing seemed to be elevated about 50 cm off the ground. any ideas? Cheers, Heath ps, it does sound rather as if he didn't like his parents very much! | |||||
| Richard Schultz 1966 side table question.. | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Dr_Pepper105 | General discussion | |
| Hi everyone. I could just kick myself at the moment! As I was walking through a flea market today I saw this table that caught my eye. I thought that I had seen it before, but didn't bother doing much about it and went on my way. Well, to my surprise, I found out it is a Richard Schultz 1966 side table. It's approx 18" square and has a white frame with the blue glass on top. I'm hoping that the person that had it will have it next time around, so my question is... is this a hard to find item? Also, what would a fair price be? Thanks! | |||||

| Anyone have a web site with lots of pics of 1940s-50s kitchen tables... | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| ... The top had the usual streamlined, ribbed strip running around the perimeter edge of the table as you often see in these old things. But the memorable part was the frame underneath. It had tubular legs that gathered toward the center and then flared back out and the three or four tubes collaring the legs at the waist of the legs before they flared out. The under carriage looked very streamlined in style. I didn't want to buy it, but I can't get the damned thing out of my mind and wonder who made it. I could find no manufacturers markings. | |||||
| Howard Miller Clock.... | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | cooljjay | General discussion | |
| ... when I hit estate sales to add to my collection. I go around looking for vintage audio components. I went back to an estate sale today for half off day. I seen a sunburst that was quite nice but was missing some spokes or something. She asked me did I see the one behind the door, nope I sure didn't. She showed me and said she would let it go for 100$ but I didn't have it. On the way back in I looked at it closer, I said its a bummer the face is cracked. She said she didn't even notice but its mine for 50$ couldn't argue with that. I came home, and scrubbed ... | |||||
