| ... stains. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=pKiTzbEDy1QC&lpg Might be an in depth resource for anyone looking to deal with stains on their wood. Although there is direct reference to a non specified species of rosewood, the alkali section that seemed pertinent didn't use rosewood as an example. Ultimately though alkali 'staining' still bleaches out with sunlight on all four of the woods tested, darkest ones fastest. So I am no longer concerned. ------------------------- And no, this is yet another table of mine, the legs of which are most definitely not ... | |||||

| Hi everyone! So I stripped it down which took an age and gave it a pretty darn good French polish if I do say so myself. In fairness I didn't give it a true French polish because every Danish table I've had does not have a glass like finish, the texture of the grain is still visible. I stopped while I could still see that! OT: My concern is, as I stripped it the rosewood became very dark. I am hoping that this is only as dark as it would have been originally and that it will fade with time. Is that the case? I'm guessing it's because it's an alkali stripper ... | |||||
| The style is more traditional | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | Identification | |
| The style is more traditional than mid-century modern. A lot of furniture companies did minor style updates in the 50s and 60s to their lines to give them a fresher look---like changing the legs to simple tapered ones. (Sometimes chairs like this were made with screw-on legs but often the legs were integral to the frame and it would be unusual for an upholsterer to cut them off and replace with screw-on legs. Most likely they are original.) Determining the date of reupholstery by how the state is abbreviated is not a sure thing either. There was no law t ... | |||||

| I have to admit, I see the similarities as well. It's just the tapering at the top and the bottom of the legs seem much different. This set also appears to be made out of Beech, you can see the little rays in the grain on the front of the legs and the thin side of the arms. I looked through my German catalog Das M̦belbuch and didn't spot anything either. Hmmm... Thank you for your observation. | |||||

| Thanks very much to both Leif and Dr Poulet. I am at least glad to know the manufacturer. I bought them thinking they would work well for my son who graduates from university this year. I didn't take into account that he is 195 cm ( 6'-3") tall, so when he sat in the chairs they were not very comfortable. They are a handsome set - but not for anyone over 180 cm I don't think. Thanks again. | |||||

| A big kiss on the cheek for you, my friend. I am just thrilled that you were able to nail this one. You are just an amazing resource and I can't thank you enough for digging this info out of a world of content. The funniest part is that I contacted Wright20 right after my initial posting and their response to me was that they didn't handle this sort of "material". And, yes I did get back to them on this one! | |||||

| aw thanks, guys. It was fun, if a bit frustrating at times. I wonder if they didn't make a lot of these big ones because of the way they're made--maybe more difficult the bigger they are? The upper torso is one piece of wood that is bored out in the center. The neck has a ball & socket joint at the torso end so that it can tilt and swivel. This fits over a turned core on the lower torso and then the bellybutton plug holds it in place! The upper torso swivels around the core on the lower torso. The legs and feet are stationery. That layer of gray foam ... | |||||

Do a google image search and you'll find tons of examples of old ones, most with more detail than yours but the basics are the same. Reproduction antique furniture was very popular in the first part of the 20th century in the U.S. In the 50s, furniture companies began updating some of that furniture for (I guess?) younger people who maybe wanted a fresher look...maybe? That's usually how it works, anyway. I mean people who didn't want ... | |||||

| Leif and I were replying at the same time! And now that i read his reply, I very much agree with his solution with the dowels. It didn't occur to me that that may have been how the original was done. Tacking would be a quicker solution for whoever redid the webbing years ago. And yeah, the webbing---when that is done correctly, you have a nice, firm base with some give to it. You can add whatever density of foam to that to customize the comfort to your liking. If the webbing is slack, you will feel a disconcerting hollow in the seat, even with very firm ... | |||||

| Thanks for your response. I had never seen an upholstered version of that chair - until your one in that photo you posted. Were they common? I guess they didn't wear as well as the other ones so didn't last. Do they command a premium because there are fewer of them? The bloke who sold me those chairs last week has offered it to me. He is very kind and sold me those chairs for less than we both knew they were worth and the price we have agreed on for this one for is less than we both know it is worth, too. He is even going to bring it to my house. I think he ... | |||||

| Wow... So that was a bit of an effort. I must have applied 12 coats of that indoor stripper. That stuff worked really well to begin with, but some parts of the varnish (that same 40%) it just didn't want to get through. I used a tiny bit of chemical stripper on it today and it finished the job - so wish I hadn't wasted so much time/money on the eco stuff. Had the window open and extractor fan on and the fumes haven't affected me all that much. So now can I bother you guys (or just Leif) with whether you agreed that the mantle banding is safe to sand with a h ... | |||||

| The seller had 3 of these, got there too late to secure the third but i did track down the other buyer and his chair has the number 3 engraved. I didn't find any pencil initials on these. Numbering of the chairs could be Inspector/maker stamps but it does seem a very big coincidence they're sequential. I got in touch with the Hanssen costumer service, maybe they'll be able to provide some more info. The thread is how i found this forum cdsilva, good stuff indeed! | |||||
