| i don't see viktor schreckengost listed here on the d.a. designer index, nor does his name appear on design dictionary in the uk. his contribution at least to american design is quite substantial. perhaps p&a can take this as a suggestion to give some space to this remarkable man who [i believe] is now 101 years old. a visit to his official site [url here] would be an enjoyable to anyone, especially those who are unfamiliar with his life and work. http://www.viktorschreckengost.org | |||||

The architect's contemporaries, Sergio Bernades, Sergio Rodrigues, Lucio Costa, Joaquim Tenreiro and Lina Bo Bardi are mentioned as having been hidden from international recognition by the effects of the military dictatorship, finally ended in 1984, which forced Niemeyer and others to live in exile for decades. I do not know much about Brazilian designers, but I have read that Brazilian furniture exports were illegal during the military dictatorship (mid 1960s to mid 1980s), and then rosewood has been banned since the early 1990s, all of which considerably reduces the window for this piece to have come to the USA. (Percival Lafer had His Brazil Contempo stores in the dictatorship period, not sure how he got around the legalities, but his stuff is the only Brazilian stuff I do s ...

| cont. Some paradigms in programming and in design have long lives. Accretion based on them is a feasible thing and so continues, for better or for worse. Computing is doing adequately without a lot of the great early geniuses of programming--the programmers who could and did do a lot with a little. I suppose one could say the same for design. When one sits on a particle board chair from Ikea descended from the modernist legacy, but designed by an engineer in Denmark and built in Taiwan, it is sufficient in some ways, even if it is not a tour de force example ... | |||||

| ... The West colonized Arab lands and forced a Jewish state in their midst. The West polluted Islam by introducing the ideas of secularism, rationalism and feminism. The West only cares about Arab countries because of their oil. Arabs and Muslims are frustrated because their own countries and leaders ? frequently supported by the West ? have failed them. Most of their leaders are harsh, authoritarian dictatorships who have done little to help the people, build functioning economies or create civil societies ? and they are divided along religious and ethnic line ... | |||||

| ... Regardless, however, war has recurring had decisive effects on modernism. The Spanish American War and the early empire building of America awakened early American literary figures like Henry James and Ezra Pound in the generation following James, that America was no longer a nation seeking to be a lighthouse for constitutional republicanism. They became aware it was a nascent empire bent on regionalization and internationalization. Thus they became, intuitively in James case, and intentionally in Pounds case advocates of modernism. They gravitated to Londo ... | |||||

| I thought there was a more recent thread about MCM furniture in movies and TV shows but I couldn't find it, so am resurrecting this one. I just discovered the show "Dicte" on Netflix and binge-watched the entire first series. It's a Danish show set in contemporary times but of course being Danish there a lot of nice Danish designed furniture in the sets. But not overly much! The interiors look like real homes and offices, not showrooms for design---lots of non-descript pieces mixed in, some antiquey stuff, etc. The Dagbladet newspaper offices have a Moge ... | |||||

As an aside, the surprisingly long advertising message which precedes that interview segment is an example of the increasing presence of commercial content on our public radio and television broadcasts. And the female voice which has lately been employed on the radio stations strikes me as annoying; there's an arch, "I'm more perfect than you'll ever be on your best day" quality to both the diction and the affect of the announcer. | AzChic.... First, on a matter of diction: what exactly does "dull and boring" mean to you? It seems a redundant cliche to me? I have never met anyone who was dull who was not also boring (and vice versa). Why be judgemental in redundant cliches? Just call me boring and I'll get the message. Second, what is wrong with political correctness? I stand up and cheer when yahoos using hate speech or pejorative names for minorities get penalized for doing so. Political correctness protects my freedom from being curtailed by prejudiced jackals abusing the first amend ...
