| If someone is delusional, | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | tchp | General discussion | |
| If someone is delusional, then they are delusional. If they see a lounge and ottoman being sold on 1st dibs in midtown Manhattan for $8000, and think that means they can sell their own chair in Oklahoma on Craigslist for the same price, then they are not going to be convinced otherwise until enough time goes by with no inquiries that they realize they are going to have to lower their price. Until then they may laugh at anyone who offers them what the same chair is selling for on Ebay, or at the local vintage shops. I see very nice rosewood examples for sal ... | |||||

| well if they are matching and one has a tag that says knoll then it pretty safe to presume that the other is knoll even with missing tags. They fall off, its a fact of life with selling that is all up to you. dont look at 1st dibs to base prices off of as they are pretty inflated. do craigslist (free) , etsy (they take 3%) ebay (10% plus paypals 3.9% and 10 cent transaction fee) or the many other selling sites that are out there. (few sites are devoted to furniture) if you do not do this sort of thing and dont know how and/or cant take the time to learn, tak ... | |||||

| I see there are a couple of what appear to be floor lamp versions of this table lamp for sale on 1st dibs. Both are stated as being Sonneman. So far I have not been able to find any documentary evidence of this, so I will keep looking. | |||||

| ... on what ? So that becomes the default description, accepted and done with. Is that how history is written ? No one is able to find documentation; even 1st dibs stays away from attribution. But the object is now "of the California school." Tsk tsk. Wonderful chair. Note the difference in the arms between the two examples . . . | |||||
| Very interesting stuff | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | pantaloons | General discussion | |
| Very interesting stuff gentlemen. Leif, great find on that morgantown piece. It's possible that is indeed who made those cabinets being that my house is in North Carolina. If my internet search of Morgantown furniture found the same company that made that 1st dibs cabinet, then they were based out of NC. I don't think they had the internet in 1956 yet, and there was one modern furniture store near here back then he could have potentially ordered from. A few things that jumped out at me were that my cabinets had no stamp on the inside of the drawer, thou ... | |||||

| ... a dark brown similar to your piece. I had to sand the veneer aggressively until I could get back some of the natural reddish color. I admittedly sanded through the veneer in a few small places. I sanded with 120, 150, 220, 320 and still did not get a thoroughly uniform color. In the places where I sanded adequately the mahogany was beautiful. To finish it, I applied BLO with 0000 steel wool. Hopefully in 10 years It will develop a darker even patina. If you want to tackle this project yourself: Its doable but wont be perfect consider only refinishing the ... | |||||
| I bought a "rare" Herman | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | keewee | General discussion | |
| I bought a "rare" Herman Miller meridian clock on Etsy last year. It wasn't rare. The seller had painted one of the common red/orange ones with nail polish. I disputed it through Pay pal. I did get my money back minus return shipping. Because of the experience, I generally won't buy on-line anymore. There are too many people watching American Pickers thinking it's easy as pie to run to estate sales and flip things. They haven't handled vintage a long time. They haven't gone through any sort of appraisal training. They don't know "excellent vintage condition" ... | |||||
| The orange chairs look even | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | keewee | General discussion | |
| The orange chairs look different than anything posted here. Higher back. How many lounge chairs were in Symmetric? There is my chair with the triangulated arms, the armless slipper chair, the tub chair with the squared arms (the red one in the ad), box cushion and round cushion in the back and the higher back orange chairs, I'm going with the front center seam. The turquoise chair from the sold first dibs ad looks to be original fabric, so thinking the front center seam is correct. I think the taupe/khaki chairs have the wrong cushions on them. The box cusio ... | |||||

| Thanks. I thought this was the later version of the Warren Church stuff. Glad to know I know something....1st dibs is scaring me. Between things like this and seeing Swanky Abode selling Adrian Pearsall chairs as the real vintage thing for $5,000 and not tell people they are new knockoffs made in their factory...I don't trust what I see on there anymroe. Thank God for Design Addict. Love you guys. | |||||

| I'm no wood ID expert but I'm pretty sure that dibs chair isn't oak. It's also very shiny. Looks redone. The OP's chair looks like it has a finish added to the original, which is now chipping off on the top of the arms. Lacquer chips like this instead of wearing off gradually, evenly like varnish or stain. Not that I'm a finish expert, either. Just throwing it out there. | |||||

| Yes thanks to everyone for all the information. Would have been great to see inside the Japanese house. The pictures look fantastic. I have always seen them referred to as straight chairs or straight back chair and assumed it was the Nakashima term. As to the different species, I believe the originals were made using a variety of species. Some of the examples I looked at on dibs seemed to be misidentifying the woods on the chairs also and contained a variety of species. The staining I dont know. These look like they were stained later on. edit: looki ... | |||||
