| The simplest solution I can think of would be... to glue quarter rounds to the inside face at the end of every other member. This would stop the articulation of the corners at 90 degrees AND allow compression to a diamond. A good carpenter could also perhaps come up with some cuts of the ends that accomplished a fixed angle at each corner...glued, dovetail cuts would almost certainly do it. But I sure couldn't make those cuts. I'd want a good cabinet maker to do it. There's also probably a tongue and groove solution that could be accomplished with a router. ... | |||||

| ... these new colors to me is little better than changing a dimension. Why be only obsessed over the Eameses? If you want a red chair, did Bertoia, Risom, Panton, etc. not already provide good options? I agree that I don't like the Vitra shell chairs ... again because they were changed. I understand the environmental reasons, but that's just me. I don't plan on "recycling" my chair when I'm done with it! LRF - I know you have no qualms with this from past discussions. I think you are the one who was to powdercoat some Eames wire chairs purple no? I know that th ... | |||||

| ... a big lawsuit or some broo ha ha about the double wire between knoll and Herman miller around 1950 and Bertoia changed that diamond chair for the knoll chairs cause the Eames wires were all double wire. and Charles was furious with Bertoia saying in stole the idea while at the Eames studio's the funny thing is that Alphaville who started making repoductions in China said o.k. we won't make the single wire Like Knoll cause we will be sued for sure so we will make the original wire and see how ... | |||||

| ... but I doubt it. And, in any case, it conveys nothing about the appealing dynamics of a car, or the traditions of a Ford (at least any I recall). His wireless device--a phone or ipod I presume--is at least simple and purposeful--though the buttons seem small enough and closely enough placed to require taping a toothpick to one's index finger in order to press only one key. Since I don't see a design date on it, I can't tell if he broke ground or just borrowed. In a world where water-boarding can be interpreted with a straight face by attorneys general, as so ... | |||||

| I went and saaw it this... I went and saaw it this morning. It was bigger than I thought. Maybe 5 feet long. Kind of beat up, no tags, although I think Schultz is right. Anyway, I passed. I did pick up the diamond chair in the photo. And that makes me happy | |||||

I had a Bertoia diamond chair that I didn't think was very comfortable so I sold it. Haven't missed it a bit. Wear and tear doesn't bother me. I get all my stuff at estate auctions and have yet to find anything in mint condition!

| This is really.... ....a question for SDR but may I just start soemwhere?. Much depends on how you want to do this. The most manual and obvious way is on the bandsaw but instead of a saw blade you put the equivalent diamond powder coated wire on the wheels. You have to get used to it, but it works well. You should also consider out sourcing it simply because the set-up coast are very low as long as you bring along a digital file...wood in all it's forms can be laser or water cut. The typical gap is 0,02" to 0,03" which is slightly less than the wire cutting ... | |||||

I was kinda headed that way myself but caught it before I got to the saturation point, I think. I have a few very famous pieces and the rest are just good designs by lesser known designers, or lesser known designs by famous designers. Works for me. I do think that one can develop an eye for design. I don't think you're either born with it or not. There are certain basic ele ...

| I've seen quite decent... I've seen quite decent covers made for diamond and bird Bertoias, Saarinen womb, and Eames dining chairs by a good upholsterer. If the foam is crunchy it can be scraped off the original cover and new foam can be bonded with spray contact glue--usually the foam is sewed IN the seams (then trimmed close) along with the fabric to keep it from shifting, so an industrial sewing machine is necessary. Or if new fabric is desired, the old cover can be used for a pattern. Knoll will of course be willing to sell you a new cover--I've occas ... | |||||

| interesting so obviously the chairs are very early. good, glad to know my judgement is intact. the quality and design is obviously Knoll, i just wasn't aware of this issue. as for the diamonds, why wouldn't they be double-wired during the same manufacturing years of the double-wired side chairs? Could it be that because the side chair's rim is bent at sharper angles it needs more structural bracing, whereas the diamond's curves are very gradual? just a thought ... Also, has nyone seen the diamond chair with a rim just as thin as the rest of the wire? thanks ... | |||||

| I dunno ... Plycraft is cool... I dunno ... Plycraft is cool enough not to deserve such an unfortunate fabric choice. Poor George Mulhauser ... he never gets cred. In a local library there are a few sofas and chairs (they seem to be Knoll unfortunately, and I am assuming they are being that they have some diamond chairs in there as well) that have been "updated" with a similar floral fabric. Absolutely sad. | |||||

| Do you have an idea of the prices? I have been offered two diamond chairs bought in the 60's made by Knoll. They are finished in black with no seat pads. They are in almost as new condition with the exception of 2 welds on the back of one of the chairs. I have looked at you posting re how to spot fakes and am 100% sure thay are genuine. Do you have any idea of their value? They are being sold for £250, (which seems good to me). | |||||

| go for the Eye I have a collection of 20+ Nelson for Howard Miller clocks. And only 1 Vitra repro -- the Eye clock. Always loved this one, but the going auction rate of $3000+ was something I was never going to spend. The repro Eye is a particular good one, I think. Well-constructed, and I think identical to the original. A large and substantial thing. Some of the repros don't look as good to me as the originals, though. I'm not crazy about the Ball clocks, e.g. But when the originals of some cost in the $thousands, well, the repros start looking better. Am considering buying, e.g., the Vitra edition of the desk version of the Kite clock (now called the "Diamond" desk clock). Could never afford the original, but what a clock! | |||||

| ... Fabrics. Is there anything I need to know re: the thickness of the leather hides? I am a little worried that I might buy something that is too thick, especially for that back piece and the arms. I noticed while surfing around on the Internet how similar the Goodform chairs look to the Emecos. I also noticed that practically every TV cop show (such as all 3 Law & Order series) uses the all aluminum Navy side chairs in their interrogation rooms! LOL! I wonder if the shows' prop masters rescue old ones or buy the new reproduction chairs? Have you ever thought ... | |||||

| Seeing the light... Thanks Geo. H. and DCW, both of you give food for thought, DCW in your usual intensive and insightful way you pretty much tracked all of the different paths I've gone down. My Dad, husband, and best friends are all either engineers or architects and musicians or music-lovers. So the parent-myth path is one I've already traveled. My Dad is solely responsible for my love of wood, building things with my hands, music and logical order. My mother is lucky if she can find a pencil to draw badly with and thinks Neil diamond is good music **invo ... | |||||
