I typically get $250-350 for a knoll diamond chair and $200-300 for these just to give you all an idea of what they're worth on the open market. personally, i think the fiberglass diamond shaped shell is amazing and I can't believe Knoll didn't mass produce these....maybe at some point down the road... | The Eames 670, Nelson slat... The Eames 670, Nelson slat bench and Noguchi coffee table have all definitely become "overly commonplace." They're great designs obviously, but they're just so boring to own (I'd say that owning them, risks making you a cliche...) Designs on the verge, for me, would include the Womb Chair and the diamond Chair. Also Eames ESUs...

| While While Bertoia made the claims that the DKR was his it is highly disputable. The Eames' wire chairs were developed in 1951-1953 (Eames Design) Bertoia had left the Eames Office in 1947. In "Charles & Ray Eames, Designers of the 20th Century" Pat Kirkham devotes a page to the complex relationship between the Eames and Bertoia. She cites differences in the way the chairs are made - Bertoia uses a diamond pattern whilst the Eames use a rectangular pattern, Bertoia's were handmade, the Eames were machine welded. Also cited are the plastic shell chairs - ... | |||||

| nate You are correct, altho most people admitted it only much later. Bertoia is generally given credit with the metal frame of the DCM/LCM. There also arose an issue when he put out his wire series for Knoll - the diamond, Bird, & Side chairs made use of a double welded wire. The Eames & Herman Miller had already patented the double wire and Bertoia was forced to rethink his - arrving at the single, heavier wire frame that we know now. For years people have whispered that the Eames Office was fairly autocratic. It revolved around the sole vision of Charl ... | |||||

| Looks original. It goes... Looks original. It goes without saying (though I'm saying it) that the value is pretty much decimated by the chair's current condition. I haven't been watching ebay prices for these recently, but vintage ones in excellent condition (no breaks, no rust, no...green paint...) generally go for a little over $200 without pads. Here's one (see link) that's been refinished and failed to sell at $189. So you're not gonna make a mint off this, I'm afraid. but if you want to refinish it (professionally or otherwise) and enjoy it, you can definitely do that for less than the cost of a mint one off ebay. I like it when people do a white top with black legs. If you're going to refinish them for sale, I'd recommend that set-up since it generally commands a premium. http://cgi.ebay.com/Original-Vintage-Bertoia-Diamond-Chair-modern-eames-...|66%3A2|65%3A13|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 | |||||

| Which is different than That is not to say that there aren't valid points to be made about ideas influencing one another. Line up Saarinen's Tulip, Eames' Plastic, and Bertoia's diamond chairs and you will see commonality. Follow the progression of Thonet & Aalto's designs using bentwood into the Eame's LCW. Take that a step further into Jacobsen's Ant & 7 Series. Go even further into Plycrafts' Cherner chair. The difference though, is that these developments are clearly influencing each other but not copying each other. Also - there are many lesser know ... | |||||

On the Bertoia diamond ... gotta say the Chrome beats both the white and the Black indoors. White should definitely stay outdoors. LuciferSum any chance you could post a photo of your Bertoia diamond in Satin-Chrome finish?

| eac4085, I'm afraid your... eac4085, I'm afraid your diamond chairs are copies. I've seen these chairs, also in orange, on eBay before. I have picture libraries on specific designers, Bertoia being on of them, and here I found these pictures which is supposely the real deal. In my mind it would have been a natural step for Knoll to launch a fiberglass version of the diamond chair along with the fiberglass 420 side chair. Perhaps production was stopped quickly due to unknown reasons, perhaps the fiberglass diamond below is a prototype. I've only ever seen one ... | |||||

| Yes I love the bertoia diamond - I'd keep it brushed chrome with just a seat pad. Super comfy and doesnt need all the extra padding. MR is expensive...but then so is the Pretzel ;-D Yeah, sorry about the whole Vitra/Herman Miller thing. My friend at DWR says they constantly get requests to ship oversees. Personally, I'd buy one here and disassemble the whole damn thing. Altho, I do love the Vitra base a little more than the US version. And screw matching wood tones. All the trees grow together in the forest, if you ask me. As long as its not beech next ... | |||||

| MR Lounge, Womb or Egg??? Hmm LuciferSum. Does the Bertoia diamond count as "Organic"? I love the MR Lounge. A pity its on the very expansive end of the scale. By matching leathers I assume you mean some shade of brown or other. Possibly a red? The Womb chair is actually back on the shortlist. I discovered that they released 2 smaller ones (85% / 75%) this year. So the chair could actually fit in the corner I have for it! Problem is, I'd probably be one of the first to order the smaller version in the UK and therefore won't actually find one to sit in f ... | |||||
