| one more try (If it shows up this time). This is a glass vase in a cane technique from my interruption series. The black lines start and stop repeatedly throughout the piece. They are also sharper than the photo shows. My camera (and I!) cant easily focus on such an intense pattern. I will re-shoot the photo before the auction. It measures 10 3/4" tall x 6" diameter (27 cm. x 15 cm.). | |||||

| Thanks, notretro. I await further views. It certainly seems that the second photo above shows a piece which was either a copy of, or was the inspiration for, your piece. Note the difference in leg diameter, height of stretcher, and (of course) the presence of rivets or other fasteners to the stretcher. I'm curious to know in what ways "cabinetmaking quality" might NOT appropriately apply to this. . .cabinet. | |||||

| If you look closely... In the second photo, You can kind of make out raised circular regions where the rear shock mounts would go. The glides do appear to be boot glides, but the rubber sleeves look longer / taller. They would also presumably be larger diameter since the rods are thicker. This is not my listing, just one that I came across. The item is located in California. | |||||

| Thanks pegboard. That makes senes to me. And I would have expected Wright to "buy American" if at all possible. A similar chair, in light-colored upholstery, was used in his New York office, in a suite sometimes called Taliesin East, in the Plaza Hotel. He only mildly customized the rooms; there was even a crystal chandelier on the ceiling of the office space. "When in Rome. . ." ? The Kauffman wine kettle was 22" in diameter, made of 3/8" steel. Way bigger than necessary. . .or practical. | |||||

| ... one of the pulls this particular thin-edge cabinet had "come out" and a repair looked tricky at best. The pieces we bought from Room and Board LOOK period and I thought they would look even better with white pulls. I may just end up getting 1" diameter porcelain pulls from an online retailer and leave the Vintage ones for someone restoring an actual thin-edge cabinet. | |||||

| Pegboard I do believe you. Just out of curiousity, I wonder if the standard LCM/DCM boot glides would fit or are the legs a different diameter? | |||||

| I think I saw a shell chair with X base recently that also had two sleeves. The sleeves were longer though, about a long as the diameter of the large shockmount. | |||||

| Proceed with caution; look for ways to slowly increase heat. Start with immersion in warm water. See what that does. Avoid methods which are likely to provide spotty heat. Ironing seems like one of these. I worked in a lamp store, and broke at least one globe because of those spring fittings. Globes are easily obtained. Start at a local lamp store (take the pieces -- there are many sizes, including diameter and rim of opening). Make sure to get the right sizes. Or look online. | |||||

| As always Koen A pleasure to read your postings. I believe the bicycle reference came about from a quote of Breuer's. "IN FACT," HE EXPLAINED, "I TOOK THE PIPE diMENSIONS (APPROXIMATELY TWENTY MILLIMETRES IN diAMETER) FROM MY BICYCLE. I diDN'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO GET IT OR HOW TO FIGURE IT OUT." (from Architonic, which lists sources as: ARIAN PAGE, FURNITURE DESIGNED BY ARCHITECTS, WHITNEY LIBRARY OF DESIGN, 1980, P. 169 CHRISTOPHER WILK, MARCEL BREUER. FURNITURE AND INTERIORS, NEW YORK, 1981, PP. 37-40, 23-25 ) Perhaps it is the same argument you make, Koe ... | |||||

| cont. I also wanted to have the top of the lid flat in order to fit more of them in the kiln. From a strictly formal point of view the shape was originally inspired by the shape of the garlic and did not feel as consistent with the other products that where based on a conical shape. These considerations became the basis for the second version. The lid became a small Venturi shaped cone with holes in the flat bottom, the top completely open in order to avoid a multiplication of holes in the product and a more conical shape rather that a "garlic" shape. | ... in mind, there is no reason why this couldn't be done even in large batches with a copy lathe but I'm hell bent on using recycled timber, its rarely a consistent supply and often has the odd nail hole or split so each piece may be slightly different, which I don't mind at all. For that reason and the fact that I enjoy applying shellac I consider it more craft. As long as the central hub is the right shape, the leg diameter and holes the right diameter and the drilling angle correct I can go to town with the lathe and work a little intuitively. I'm using m ... | |||||

| The reason I wanted it | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| The reason I wanted it is because of all the variations, this is the way (I think) this particular clock should look...dark wood spikes and brass center. It makes it so elegant. By the way, this is the 19" diameter smaller Starburst clock (2202)...someone is selling the giant Starburst on eBay (2230) which has a large 30" diameter! Problem is that clock has some broken off spoke tips and a couple of them are loose. They are nearly impossible to fix, so I'll sticik with the small cute one. By the way, I'm serious about wanting to find some red second hands ... | |||||
