| . For once a thread not dominated by American design!! Pretty shaky ground huh? For me just about any pre 1980 Lancia, or maybe a Facel Vega or Citroen SM Too many nice watches out there to choose, I'm a bit sick of all those flash modern Rolexes and Breitling chronos with all the useless dials. Save 'em for the footballers (soccer players). Much prefer a nice Max Bill Junghans. | |||||

The rest of my argument is predicated on your positioning (which I may be reading erroneously) that Modernica makes knock-offs as a way of preserving design. If this is correct than I submit that the designs Herman Miller continues to produce - i.e. the plastic chairs, are not in NEED of preserving, as Herman Miller and the Eames have decided that the materials are bad. I followed that by saying that IF Modernica wanted to pursue preservation as their g ...

| ... Both are unfortunate inevitabilities of the internet. 🙁 The solution for the sniping is simply to remember that the written word doesnt translate the complete feelings of a comment: something may be meant jokingly, but come across in type as being mean or sarcastic. Also - the main purpose of this forum is to advance the understanding and dialog of design. If an idea is challenged resist the urge to take it personally. Take a few minutes and compose a response, but wait a few more moments before hitting the post button - we've all learned the hard way ... | |||||

| 2 faves Split answer. In person, my favorite shop is a little junk shop in Cambridge. The owner knows when he has good stuff, but lets it go for cheap - including a DCM for 20$, a bertoia diamond for $100 -(sadly neither were to me). However - here's a dialog from my most recent purchase. "How much for the (plycraft lounge) chair in the window?" "$250" "why so expensive?" "Because...its a beautiful chair" "it IS a beautiful chair...but you sold one a week ago for $150...I'll give you $150 for this one" "Sold" 😀 My other answer is Craigslist. I love the s ... | |||||

| ... a good things, but it is hardly confined to designers. Empathy is important indeed, because we never design for ourselfs. Design for industrial production is born as a result of the industrial revolution and replaces the previous communication between user and artisan. I admit that it is slightly different from the direct dialog between de user and the maker as it existed before the industrial revolution. The pre-industrial user could count on craftsmanship in the making of the product he/she and the artisan had envisioned, but not necessarily on a creative ... | |||||

| bj, the decisions almost always end with the position of the hands when displaying or photographing timepieces with traditional radial dials. It seems the consensus is often a choice between ten past ten or twenty past eight so as not to obscure any markings and to present a balanced appearance. The smiley face usually wins. Neat collection and pretty good pics. Thanks for sharing. | |||||

A friend showed me a magazine article, long ago, which illustrated the history of Volvo's styling. EVERY ONE of their early models, including unrealized prototypes, was a direct knock-off of some (usually American) design, with the possible exception of the P-1800 (?) squareback sports coupe. Found objects are mostly one of a kind and is more a form of re-using or re-cycling whereas ready mades like the tractor seats, the transformers etc. in Castiglioni's case are components that are generally available. I therefor think that the distinction between the use of a ready made and the use of other components like screws, springs, ball bearings, you name it, is quite artificial. Product design seems to be successful when desigers have made a mature, developed interpretation of materials to the body and have created some kind of dialog: whatever interpretation it is, it shows a clear perspective. Design is sexy when it's not dealing with sex, but invites a dialog, shows confidence and clarity,an openness to vulnerability, and delicacy as well as competence, and playfulness- to what some people would still term "masculine" and "feminine". Maybe gay men have historically dealt more immediately with all of these que ...

| Thanks for the tidbit If you're interested in design, architecture etc, sell a kidney and get it... I am lucky i don't need to sell a kidney to get the books, but if i did my brother is a world famous kidney specialist in Houston Tx that speaks around the world on Renal disease and Kidney dialysis. He could more than likely get me a good deal on another one, or i could ask my identical twin brother if he could spare one since we are a match. | |||||

Not as an admonishment, per se, but more in a way of encouraging accuracy and consistency. You may, or not, thank me later. Often with works like these we must consider the maker's intent as primary. Without documentary evidence to the contrary, we can understand a lot from Juhl's choosing to tack the the boards directly to a wall, unframed, as graphic elements of an exhibit featuring his furniture designs. I did, however, buy a plastic production as a gift for someone because I knew she wanted a color that was difficult to find. Olive - the letter suggests nothing against buying vintage - something I highly encourage -especially to those looking for the feel of the 'real' thing. If you want fibreglass, buy vintage and save the material of both the Modernica & Vitra productions. SDR - Whe ...
