(stupid internet world...) also... I guess while a personal consultation with a knowledgeable professional may be theoretically desirable, interior designers tend to be idiots, in my experience... (I sure wouldn't trust one to select my furniture). Dialog helps to resolve questions, though, even if it's just with yourself. Some of us have talked about this before--about a risk of this being a problem with the Neo Modern Revival. Some of us have tried to articulate a guiding philosophy, but apparently with out sufficient persuasiveness even to mobilize ourselves in this small community. I even tried, but I'm an amateur and not up to the challenge. Koen laid out a philosophy of neofunctionalism with an ethic of building on what has come before and a surrender of the a ...

| Anyone read "Experiencing Architecture" by...Part II My impression is that Rasmussen was ready for modernism to take the next step by 1957. But even in 1957 he seemed to understand that to reduce modernism to some kind of dialectic opposition to preceding architecture might stunt or kill its further development. One cannot read Rasmussen's little book today without recalling Robert Venturi's Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, which came less than a decade on its heels. Venturi likewise sought to take Modernism to the next step. Both turned to buil ... | |||||

| Sticky note... I think that if you want to keep out the riff-raff, so to speak, maybe it would be a good idea to have a sticky note/thread like Heath suggested. I've run a BBS/forum before, but I moderated it and approved memberships. Perhaps you could require certain qualifications be met in order to post, automatically transfer ID requests to a separate thread as Artie suggested), or if you had a popup/dialog that explained the purpose of the forum, so that wayward users don't end up here. All good things to consider. Thanks for your time. | |||||

| I can quote a fair bit of dialog from "The Black Cat" -- it was my favorite movie as a kid. Slab doors with brushed-metal center bands and lever handles; impressive floating metal stair against odd eggcrate backwall; nice night-time profile with long lighted strip windows, etc etc. Hjalmar Poelzig, indeed ! | |||||

| A naive question: Would it be unacceptable, and unheard-of in retail practice, to have the two colors sold in their respective sizes, different by 2% in height and width ? I'm a believer in allowing material(s) to have their say in the design/manufacture dialog, I guess. But do carry on toward the ideal. . .! | |||||

He can look into any product more deeply than thought possible, discern the legacy principles of its design, work through and improve upon them, and yield a product that looks, as I said, both new and as if it has always existed. It is a remarkable skill capable of being exercised only by a first rate mind with the antennae of an artist, the conscience of a humanist, the will of a master, and the heart of an angel. So many great creative artists wor ...

| Barry: There's really... Barry: There's really nothing to agree or disagree with. I think you're assuming, quite wrongly, that I am propounding knock-offs in place of originals or licensed repros. At most I'm simply promoting a dialogue of a more dialectical nature, rather than a position based on heart felt opinions and generalizations. That said, I have suggested that there are unofficial manufacturers, including Modernica and Modern Woodworks to name two, who make exceptionally high-end renditions of certain classics, using high-grade materials, and in bo ... | |||||

Your postulate is: connection of a movement to a profound, robust, and durable philosophy and aesthetics allows the movement to readapt itself as times and technologies and competing alternative movements change and fall away. Alternatively, other movements connected to more superficial philosophies and aesthetics tend to decay into styles or even self-parodies, and eventual irrelevance. You also seem to asserting a dynamic based on that postulate. The dynamic appears to be: action, reaction, competition, selection. I would ...

| Dammit Man! That was the perfect opportunity for an added pic or two. I'd love to see some drag & Drop interface where I can drag any pic from my desktop into the DA message I'm currently editing and it pops in "poof" right there. No additional dialogs, modal or otherwise, no menu no concious effort whatsoever to populate your posting with pictures other than to pick the pictures. puh .. pp puh that's a lot of pppppppppp http://cfg.cit.cornell.edu/biblio/biblio.html | |||||

| I have recently acquired an Ercol windsor rocker and high back chair circa mid 90's. I have since looked in the states for others and have noticed limited availability. My question is, what do you all think of the quality, style and design of the Ercol brand. So much time and dialogue is spent on danish modern furniture, I was curious how this brand was perceived. http://www.flickr.com/photos/70043181@N02/6363131375 | |||||

| In my NEOCON 2006 write-up I mentioned a new chair from HBF... I finally found a picture online and it was also in an ad in the latest Metropolis... It takes MCM cues and reminds me a bit of the 60's Laverne clear plexiglass high back lounge chair (in form).. It was comfortable to boot... | ... it exposes all the other super cars of by today as posers. It is absolutely necessary in our current baroque age of pointless, superficial product variation that design follow two contradictory paths in order to escape and commence a new enlightenment. The first path is that recommended by koen. One group of talented, dedicated designers must move toward sustainability in design. Another group of talented, dedicated, perhaps fanatical designers must move in another direction: they must target faux excellence spun by marketers and leap ahead of it in order t ... | |||||
