| Bought this "Nelson-ish" clock today.... After learning about George Nelson's clocks from this thread, I decided I had to pay homage to Nelson by having one of his whimsical designs on my wall. Either a ball type clock or a starbust/sunburst type model. I had my eye on a few different ones, until I came across this one this afternoon at Structube (modern furniture store in Montreal, $39 retail), and decided that's what I wanted. It's obviously "inspired" by the Nelson designs, but I don't think it's just a copy of a George Nelson/Miller clock, but an origina ... | |||||

| Very nice The only bit I disagree with is the status given to the Mont Blanc pen and Rolex watch. Both of which I think are a tad effete. Still highly regarded more as a testament to their publicists than any honestly "timeless" superiority. I'm rather more impressed by a Bic and a good Timex. I think value is an important component of good modern design. Does the Rolex have an Indiglo® illuminated dial? | |||||

| I agree with Olive Kids take to new technology so much quicker tha n'we' do We text a lot more here in the UK than you folks in the US..but I wouldn't see a rotary dial as a hindrance..with the phone held in both hands each numeral is probably closer in a circular format..I'd soon learn it..and I ain't a kid ;o) | |||||
| round controller | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | James Collins | General discussion | |
| round controller The apple round controller does not try to mimic the old rotary phone dial like the B & O does. On the iPhone you can display a full numeric keypad OR a full qwerty keypad. The round iPod controller was just for music. It's not about the shape it;s about the function. And RTFM stands for read the f**king manual. | |||||

| ... stick-built home. I use far less heating oil than similar non-passive solar homes. For example, I've only used about 300 gallons of #2 heating oil since October ($~1000) We generally don't use more that 500 gal per year in total. I also bought a cord of firewood for $275 which will carry me for weekend use into late March. Our monthly electricity use, even considering we have a pond and fish taknk that run constantly is only about 700kWh. The US average is about 1000kWh per household. Many folks are much higher. This home also has other features that make i ... | |||||

| First...Pt 6 I doubt that anyone pays Koen, good as he is, for designing stuff that is like a leg. They pay him for designing great products. If he tells them the concert hall is like a leg, they probably punch rem koohhaus on their speed dial. If Koen tells the guy he designs trash barrels for that he is really designing him a leg, the guy, probably named Maury, or Wo Fat, says, "what is it with these nice looking geniuses from Antwerp. I want a fucking trash barrel. I don't want a trash barrel called a fucking leg. I want a fucking trash barrel." And so Ko ... | |||||

| B & O Serene mobil The "dial" shaped keypad will doom this ridiculous product to niche status. You can't expect generations of people raised on the 3x3 numeric pad to use this. Try text messaging on this thing. You say you don't text message? Well the kids all do and in twenty years they will be buying products and we will be pushing up daisies. Another example of B & O form over function. | |||||
| The 122 Amazon | 1 Relevance | 22 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| The 122 Amazon was the first version of that car seen here in the US; its initial grille design was the one inspired by the '55-'56 Chrysler. A friend in Cambridge had a later one, and I think he was rapping his knuckles on the dashboard, too; so much for "safety"! The air conditioner had an incomprehensible dashboard dial with three positions: Highway, City, and Colder (?!). We laughed and laughed -- or maybe that was the drugs. . . | |||||

| ... and look, or alternately, if it had had even less interface with more complexity of function. By the last observation, I doubt the iPod would have been the smash success it has become had it condenced the enormous complexity and multiplicity of function into a single dial the way iDrive tried to do in a BMW. Steve may be an ego maniac and a perfectionist, and too much of a control freak, but he has a great sense of balance and elegance and of recognizing their presense or absense in the designs of those he hires. | |||||
