a funny thing | 2 Relevance | 18 years ago | LRF | General discussion
a funny thing I have about 5 original wire chairs from around 1951 from Knoll and they a re single wire. My neighbor got two new wire chairs from Furniture Fancy on line in chrome and they were double wire. I think if I am not mistaken there was a big lawsuit or some broo ha ha about the double wire between knoll and Herman miller around 1950 and Bertoia changed that Diamond chair for the knoll chairs cause the Eames wires were all double wire. and Charles was furious with Bertoia saying in stole the idea while at the Eames studio's the funny thing is that Alphaville who started making repoductions in China said o.k. we won't make the single wire Like Knoll cause we will be sued for sure so we will make the original wire and see how many smart people out in Design land will really know the origin of this one!!!! It was the way the original chair was suppose to look before the lawsuit . I think we caught alphaville trying to be real smart......Always looking to be corrected if I am worng.....
Personally I kinda struggle with the Look/Feel thing | 2 Relevance | 17 years ago | Olive | General discussion
Personally I kinda struggle with the Look/Feel thing I am not a big 'stuff' person. I wouldn't classify myself as a collector, like many of you refer to yourselves here. I own a few pedigreed pieces, but I also own a lot of things from Target and IKEA. I buy what I like to look at and what is functional. Without both aspects in a thing or a space I am left feeling at odds. I'd rather have nothing than buy a thing that fails on either point. My spaces tend to be designed/arranged mostly by feel. The only renovations we've done at our home have been to make them work better. However, we, of course, took the opportunity to integrate products we liked the look of. HUbby pretty much gives me the run of the place when it comes to design, but the times he vociferously interjects his opinion is when I have done something that he feels won't be comfortable for him. Thankfully, the man has never suggested an overstuffed recliner chair. What prompted me to start the thread was the realization that, for me, color is all about feel. I have noticed I put color where I want a distinct feeling, and go neutral when I want a backdrop for various activities/emotions. I have cool, calm watery colors in the bath. In the bedroom, there's a fresh crisp citron green to wake up to in the morning that fades to a soft warm candlelight tone in the evening. Yet, in my main lving space I've put a neutral warm grey with small splash of brick red and citron green that reflects onto the kitchen and dining spaces. So when I think about space I guess I really am more of a 'fgeel' person and I wondered about what you all are thinking. Looks like AzChick is a feel person too. And maybe you as well BigTVman...I'm waitingto here from whitespike, my fellow in arms...
The real thing? Knoll coffee table ... | 2 Relevance | 15 years ago | attygreen13 | General discussion
Hi everyone - need ID help on a tulip table, figured i'd ask the experts 🙂 bought a large coffee table with tulip base for cheap this morning and just assumed it was a nice knock-off. while wiping it clean, i noticed a partial label on the bottom - it says "---- International" with a New York address and the font looks very much like the Knoll stickers I'm used to seeing. The top screws onto the very heavy base by a single rod and there is no hardware showing underneath once the base is attached (unlike my Burke tulip, which bolts with 4 visible screws and a bracket underneath). The edge is beveled. The only thing that throws me - the table is oval and measures 54 inches long by 36 wide. All the Knoll oval coffee tables I can find are much smaller in size. Does anyone know if this size was made at some point? Do I have the real thing with half a sticker, or something else? Thanks in advance for any help!
If you are in your own car vs. a tour bus or some such thing | 2 Relevance | 16 years ago | Big Television Man | General discussion
If you are in your own car vs. a tour bus or some such thing I can give you a ton of places that are a bit off the beaten path. Not so much design per se, but great places to eat and see.

first thing that popped in my mind... ...wait is it the gold chair. He-he. Sandblast (maybe excessive), or pressure wash which works for spray paint? Just a thought.

yes on the Google image thing, Heath--- grrr! Habits are so ingrained, even with something that still seems relatively new (that one can search just for images, i mean). Love the fishing rods.
I was thinking the same thing. | 2 Relevance | 12 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
I was thinking the same thing. Can you feel the frame through the padding on the arm? Is the padding very poufy? It has such a clunky shape on the ends.

That is a very nice thing indeed. Produced by Thorald Madsen Snedkeri, is the frame produced from Mahogany? So glad you rescued it from the dumpster.

another teak thing But it's not particularly old and I'm pretty sure it's not Scandinavian-made. It might not even be teak. I swiped it out of the dispensing room of my husband's optometric office.

a wonderfully weird thing, a | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | waffle | General discussion
a wonderfully weird thing, a chess set made out of BUTTERFLY WINGS. From Brazil, from between the 1930's to the 1950's (apparently). Needed a little gluing but overall in excellent shape.
Oh one more thing | 2 Relevance | 13 years ago | Joshua F (USA) | General discussion
Oh one more thing You know what he likes to use to put on an incorrect label? Double stick tape... I kid you not. If you are going to fake 4 figure chairs...wouldn't you at least use glue so it would dry and not come apart when it got humid out? My gf even laughed out loud when she saw that. So I took photos of it, and then cleaned it off. At least the chair is not pretending to be something it isn't so much anymore.
That's it alright. One thing | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | Cornaroy | Repair
That's it alright. One thing i am not totally sure about at this point is whether the wood is walnut or the walnut-stained beech that I have seen used for other IKL chairs for Selig. Any thoughts cdsilva?
