| Making a mid century atomic ranch door | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | difeliciantonio | General discussion | |
| Started making this today to replace a remuddle door that was put on about 10 years ago. I have been eyeing doing something but the window lites from crestview are pretty pricy. But on Monday, driving back home from post office I eyed a old mid century diagonal tri-window door on the curb. The door itself was torn up missing almost the entire bottom side, BUT the Windows where in good shape and removable! So here is yet another project I am doing before I move to Hong Kong at the end of the month. The door is a flat panel solid core door from Home Depot. Was ... | |||||

| ... convex, drawer stack on the left, lower file drawer with an organization insert (stuff went in at a diagonal), dowel legs to the outside of edge of the top & drawers, wood stretcher that didn't appear to leave a lot of leg room, solid wood finger pulls about 2" wide. The drawer pulls and wood tone were very similar if not identical to this Knoll credenza. Though I have yet to find a single desk resembling what I saw. | |||||
| Identify these chairs please | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | marten | General discussion | |
| ... look perfectly perpendicular, on the back and underside the straps are on a slightly diagonal direction. No tags, brands or labels whatsoever. Next to my Jens Risom chairs these appear very light, and also somewhat more elegant with the back legs pulled in somewhat under the seat. Can anyone help me identify these chairs? I have looked through my design books but without success..... Thank you! | |||||

| So I was wandering around and found a bucket of some heavy gauge fittings similar to the ones used with guard rails and fencing, had a play with them and thought that turning up and polishing some 2 inch dia. dowel could make a for a bed frame and other things, then I thought gazebo and why not a whole house? You'd need to either shape (for the corners) some inset wood panels/windows or cast aluminium frames (inset) or bolt some box section steel to the inside/outside and screw all the cladding to that. Heres a pic of something similar though I think it'd ... | |||||

| I know very little about fabrics, but I want to report that a pillow I have in the living room is covered with some kind of ideal upholstery goods. It might be called suede cloth, or maybe it's a velour of some kind. Very low nap, an almost invisible fine grain; the back shows a weave with a diagonal grain (if that makes sense). I've seen its like on the seats of cars from the 'thirties, or maybe on theater seats ? Anyway, it's wearing like iron and doesn't show soiling. Highly recommended ! | |||||

| objectworshipif you want... objectworship if you want i could make you a ltr that have double the measurements. use 5/16 rod for the main hoops and 1/4 rod for the diagonal pieces and laminate some 3/4 plywood so the top is 1.5 inch | |||||

| Nice work defeliciantonio (And the LTR isn't bad either!) Seriously, the table looks much better with the smaller diagonal rod. Is it possible that the top is a bit large? Or is that just the lack of beveled edge that is making it seem that way? I missed out on so much since Ive been away. | |||||

The arms on the first chair look a bit clunky compared to the graceful cigar legs, and the second chair looks top-heavy on those slim tapered legs. But mostly the vinyl looks awful and needs to go! | |||||
| Replacing Cord on Danish Side Chairs - 3rd edition | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| ... down the street from work and they have classes, so it's been on my mind to try it. The chord is decent, but I don't think it's original. There's a bunch of cardboard shoved between the two layers. My guess is that it was done by a previous owner to firm up the seat. I'd be surprised if it left the factory that way. The chord is tied together in at least ten different places, which seems kind of sloppy. Good tip about the soap flakes, I'll try it. The pattern on the chair I picked up is different from the chair in the poster (that I ... | |||||

| ... stated it was reupholstered using a kvadrat fabric. As I went to the Tecno sheet, I saw 'Field' being offered as one of their optional fabrics. I assume they used this fabric from when it was introduced by Kvadrat. My experience is that Tecno shifted from domestic clients to much more office orientated products, over the years. In that sense it wouldn't surprise me they offered a polyester based fabric like Field because it's more suited to a slick office environment? I assume I would be bothered by the feel of poly, but I do like the bold structure. Then a ... | |||||

| Whoa there, not just "a staple puller" but a Berry staple puller. You can get them online. My life was changed forever after getting one. Don't bother with other types! (or screwdrivers, they are awful.) You will also need a pair of diagonal pliers for pulling staples. The Berry tool gets them out partway and then you go back and get them out all the way with the diagonal pliers. Spring-loaded handles are best--saves a lot of wear on your hands when you are pulling thousands of staples, and enables you to go faster. You can count on spending at least ... | |||||

| I just had an idea: instead... I just had an idea: instead of using loopy grain veneer which will most show the gaps with the diagonal grain lines, and instead of quarter sawn (which will hide the grain loss, but is boring), why not use horizontally figured teak veneer. The figure will draw the eye right across the slats horizontally and grain loss won't be visible. Example: http://www.veneersupplies.com/products/AAA-Teak-Figured-Veneer-Lot--7-x-... | |||||

| SDR Good points. When you think of it as a 3-D "sketch", and consider that there might have been a few different versions, just so they could see them beyond the drawing stage, then it becomes more logical. I myself have filled many a sketchbook full of godawful shapes that were ultimately discarded-- so why not a full size "sketch" just to get a sense of the feel and presence of a piece? And my plywood edge comment above is easily refuted once the top is painted in black and white. It IS a strange and gangly shape, and I can see why it didn't go further, ... | |||||

| Oh, Randy is a delight. I'm so glad I was introduced to her here ! Binaca -- really. More ! In the meantime, I call tonight's sunset "Flying object over San Francisco." Of course, it's probably the 4:45 Portland-to-San diego shuttle, or something. The skeletal structure visible in many of my shots is the 1973 Sutro Tower, owned by a consortium of local television broadcasters and built on a western peak about 100 feet from the mansion of a former mayor of the city, Adoph Sutro. A close-up photo shows the scale of the structure, by revealing a walkway a ... | |||||
| Rep, which I suggested above, | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| Rep, which I suggested above, has the same appearance as twill without being diagonal---but the ribbing isn't lengthwise, it's on the cross grain, or "railroaded". To do that sofa without a seam down the center of the inside back and in the middle of the seat, the fabric would be railroaded---which would make the rep "ribs" run from top to bottom. That's what it looks like to me, anyway. Rep gets that look from fine textured warp threads woven over heavier weft threads. You can't see the weft threads at all because the fine threads completely cover them. ... | |||||
