| Matthew, no disrespect... Matthew, no disrespect intended but the rules of the forum state this isn't a free valuation service. We're all happy to help with id's but if posters start to help on valuations then every man and his dog will be posting asking for such help. You have the designer/model now so the rest is upto you.. | |||||

| Funny, I was dissapointed in Dwell this month too | 2 Relevance | 18 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Funny, I was dissapointed in Dwell this month too I'm getting tired of prefab month after month. I'm all for it, but I'd like to read about broader subjects. As for graphic design: Charlie Harper (love the cardinals) Peter Max (vintage, remember Lipton's giggle noodle soup?) Joel Nakamura (much of his work is focused on mythology) My nephew Max (who these days is in a 'Mark Rothko' phase) | |||||

| I don't think you'll be dissappointed My equally indecisive, anal-retentive, research-doing engineer of a father has loved his. He has the iPod set up and in his workshop. He and his vast collection of chisels, lathes, routers fret saws, etc delight to the sounds of Beethoven and Brahms whilst he grins like an idiot and announces, 'look how small that thing is!....it's amazing!' | |||||

| Posted by: objectworship Go get the Lazboy, it’s objectively more comfortable, and they have a lifetime warranty on frame/springs/mechanism. Dude, you just told him he cannot get a refund. Now you want him to go spend thousands more after he already spend 6K on a chair? Posted by: objectworship Lack of odor is not a problem Thin low quality leather is definitely a problem with a hefty 6k price tag, i.e. semi aniline leather. Genuine quality Leather ALWAYS has a distinct odor. Again this is a 6K chair that use to sell for well below 1K. | |||||
| Ruskin's color statement is tough to dissect and refute-- | 2 Relevance | 18 years ago | william-holden-... | General discussion | |
| Ruskin's color statement is tough to dissect and refute-- it's vague to the point of being meaningless. "Pure" means nothing, in this context. "Thoughtful" means: absorbed in thought; meditative; characterized by careful, reasoned thinking. Therefore, Ruskin's saying that the most careful, reasoned thinkers are those that love color the most. (or, "The best minds love color.") If one can produce a "best mind" indifferent to color (Whitespike cited Eames, as one example), it proves Ruskin's statement is false. No one's attacked Ruskin personally-- we've quest ... | |||||
| As always, an excellent dissection of the issue, Koen. | 2 Relevance | 17 years ago | Poach | General discussion | |
| As always, an excellent dissection of the issue, Koen. May I add that inherent in the sustainability of any product is its longevity. Polypropylene is softer material than the original FRP, and is more prone to scratching, scarring, abrasion. The PP chairs will wear faster, and need to be replaced more often than FRP chairs. One more observation. The PP execution is not something Charles and Ray (nor any competent designer) would find acceptable. By integrating the shock mounts into the shell, and not compensating for wall thickness, Vitra has introduce ... | |||||

| First, correctly spell dissertation...Pt. 1 Then read several great dissertations. The only one I know of is "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture" by Venturi, but I'm sure the pros here would know many others. Then see if you can find any part of the dissertation's argument that fascinates you. Then see if you can find a way to advance, or refute that small part of the argument with some idea of your own. Then be very crafty about picking a potential dissertation committee chairman to show it to. Then only listen to what he says if he is willing to ... | |||||

| Dissing eames? | 2 Relevance | 16 years ago | MadHaus | General discussion | |
| Dissing eames? seriously? Hundreds of designers after there time have created many things hoping to come close to what they accomplished, they are two of the best in the history of modern design. to not have respect and call them over rated just means your ignorant. You probably have many things in your house that are made by designers going for the eames look. Eames is just one of the many collected names like Saarinen Nugachi Paul McCobb (even though you can get it at DWR you should still have love for the roots of it all if your truly into mid century/ modern design. | |||||
| Alcohol will not dissolve | 2 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | Repair | |
| Alcohol will not dissolve lacquer. You have to use either lacquer thinner or acetone. I prefer acetone because it works faster; lacquer thinner has stuff added to it to slow down evaporation but the additives make it work more slowly, too. I worked out a few tricks for dealing with the evaporation issue. Some people prefer to use methylene chloride stripper but I like acetone---works fast, easier to clean up. Definitely has its own headaches, though. (not *actual* headaches---not if you use a respirator like you should!) | |||||
| Mineral spirits will not dissolve | 2 Relevance | 13 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| Mineral spirits will not dissolve shellac. You have to use alcohol. I like your CH23 just fine! I think it's lovely. It's a different look than an old cord seat with no sealer, but it is no less beautiful. I would not redo it just because it was shellacked a long time ago. (I considered redoing my Mogensen chair when I first got it because it looked different, but I came to my senses. When the cord breaks, I'll redo it.) | |||||
