| Is this discussion not being a tad bit dismissive of the American companies that build factories in China to supply the Chinese themselves? Instead of focusing on Chinese companies supplying inferior (and sometimes dangerous), products for export, can we not also appreciate those American companies that have expanded into China and that remain one of the few bright spots for potential growth of our own economy by supplying global markets? I worry that we may be painting all companies that have anything to do with "China" with a very broad brush. Wal-Mart c ... | |||||

| I am a little surprised by the diversity of responses... but that only means that I had not thought about this before. As I was trained as a feasibility analyst, I am inclined to address this discussion in a framework of feasibility. To me, design consists of a designer, a problem, a context and a solution. There is also a legacy of related design solutions and failures, whether viewed as wholes or in components, some epistemic software called aesthetics, some other epistemic software called societal values and zeitgeist the designer is aware of consciously, ... | |||||

| Hi we had this discussion l... Hi we had this discussion last month you might check the the archives but several came to the conclusion that the one with the stand up feet is made by Herman Miller in America and the one with the flat feet is made by Vitra in Europe . No one had any idea why the two were different , Some one did come up with a label made by another company in Britain that had a license from Hermna miller in the 60's with a name that I forgot, The label was shared by both makers, | |||||

| I believe I saw a discussion on plywood floor tiles on www.livemodern.com (formerly, the Dwell discussion boards). I recall that someone had attached the plywood tiles with biscuit joints and floated the floor over the existing concrete. The posted pics looked nice. I'm thinking of doing something similar in my basement. | |||||

| I guess shock is a fitting word for this discussion... I am kind of shocked that you and Olive would want to let antiquities erode away. Good lord, should the British Museum just put their antiquities outside on the lawn and let weather and air pollution wear them down too nothingness? How about the Greek and Roman busts in the Uffizi in Florence? Should they be put on pedestals outside along the Arno for the pidgeons to shit on? What gives here? Statues and paintings should be preserved, but not structures? I don't follow your reasoning here at all. And in ... | |||||

| OK, you're right, this is a real discussion not a vitreous tirade about 'originals' vs. knockoffs. Koen, your comments about media are interesting. They make me wonder if the recent resurgance of the mid-cent stuff is partly due to it being publicized more in coffe table books, movies, etc. Growing up in a New England farm town full of real colonial everything I never saw any thing 'modern' until I went to college. As far as I knew the Nelson benches in the library were designed the week before I plunked my Biology 101 books on them, but I bet you most high ... | |||||

| Previous discussion on area rugs I posted a similar question a while back. I was told that, traditionally, the front legs of the furniture pieces rest on the edge of the rugs. But for a more contemporary or modern look, let the rug float. | |||||
