| ... but a lot of communities, including some states are striking out on their own and making sustainability and environmental issues and concerns a cornerstone of their official policies. Places like the state of California and San Francisco are leading the way in some of these areas. Ultimately it is an enlightened citizenry that will lead the way on these issues, the question remains however, whether a government entity will encourage such actions on your part or discourage them. I know that you are more then aware of this, my curiosity lies in what you in en ... | |||||

| It's often discouraged to hang | 2 Relevance | 13 years ago | tktoo | General discussion | |
| It's often discouraged to hang anything valuable or sensitive to environmental conditions over a fireplace that gets used. That means everybody just does it anyway, naturally. A deep projecting mantle helps, and works on paper are typically glazed to help protect them, but you should still be aware that it can get incredibly dry and sometimes a bit sooty up there depending on design and frequency/duration of use. And I'm really glad you're not putting a blasted TV up there. Whenever I see that, it just makes me want to tear my hair out and kick somebody. | |||||

| ...and discouvering... small marvels along the way. Arthur Ganson was mentioned on another thread a few days ago. A poems-bend with-wire sculptor, un-known to me...until this week-end. I could not stop looking at this wish-bone pulling a relatively huge construction with an effortless elegance that only walking wish-bones can display. So much to discouver and enjoy...and so little time left. Thanks Annette! | |||||

| informed discourse and charlie brown i read and read again the posts from our beloved and astute contributors. what part of the discourse i actually understand i find enlightening and for the most part interesting; but i confess that i feel much like charlie brown in the following scenario: * * * linus and charlie brown are walking to school together with their lunches and show-and-tell treasures in tow. charlie brown begins the conversation: charlie brown: "what did you bring for show-and-tell today?" linus [greatly paraphrased from memory only.]: ... | |||||

| opportunity for discourse Perhaps the lack of texture and depth in the posts is a mirror of the paucity of intellectual discourse in society. People seem more interested in pithy sound bites and one liners to respond to complex issues. It may appear, for the moment, as though design has descended into realm of the superficial acquisition and illusion of status. Just as art was and is a chronicler of history, so is design. And it is still being and will be recorded in the works of Ingo Maurer, Zaha Hadid, Pepe Cortes and the creators behind Plastic Buddha, ... | |||||

Since the launching of the radar two month ago, I validate each new entry proposed by the sellers and it is the occasion for me to sometimes discover designers that I did not know or to rediscover objects that I knew but that are too seldom visible. I thus invite you to share here your comments on the objects that you find worthiest of interest or on the discoveries that you made on the radar. One of my choices: Augusto Bozzi Kosmos sofa and easychairs 1958 I like the elegance of these pieces, the lightness of th ... | |||||

| You might discover that scrubbing with warmed Murphy's oil soap works as a stripper. Or if it is lacquer, then acetone would take it off. Almost certainly a citrus stripper would take it off. Certainly a methylene chloride stripper would. Anyway, I think you will need to remove the finish from the whole side and then refinish it. Depending on your results you might need to strip the whole piece and then refinish the whole piece. And I would do an oil finish. Spanky's suggested teak oil would probably give you a very nice finish. Especially if you do ... | |||||

| ... the ticket off the item, you are obliged to buy it. Most of the honest sellers here have gotten rid of sign up sheets because they were rife with fraud and also unfair to out of town buyers who would have to make two trips to the site-one to sign up and another to wait. Impossible for some people. There is still one company that has a sign up sheet and they're really dishonest about it. You'd be first in line only to discover that they signed 30 of their friends and family up at the store in the weeks preceeding the sale. They'd also do things like say "no ... | |||||

| Nice pic here of the discover... Nice pic here of the discovered Aalto constructivist chairs in the foyer. I've always wanted one of Chermayeff's 'Plan' chairs which he used in the DLWP yet in 20 years of being interested in this stuff (and having owned pieces by Aalto, Isokon, Gerald Summers, Denham MacLaren etc along the way) I've yet to even see one. | |||||

| There are some discussions on the board about this particular weave in cane---look for Bambi chair and the Wegner round chair with cane seat. I rewove an Olsen settee with this weave and did a pretty good job without any prior experience with the weave and only a little experience with cane, though I had a lot of experience with paper cord weaving which helped in some ways. There are tricks to it that are essential to success. If you don't know the tricks, you'll want to tear your hair out! There will be a learning curve that will take up at least one sec ... | |||||
