| Actually, Spanky, I'd disagree... IKEA has great bedding if you have had any education on how to pick fabric. They use a less thread-count poorer quality cotton on their 'fad-ish' prints. If you opt for a solid color, look for a higher thread count, and check the 'hand' of the fabric, you can do quite well. I have some IKEA duvet sets that are still going strong after 7 or so years of frequent use. However, you have to expect wrinkles out of pure cotton if you use a dryer instead of a clothes line, that's just the nature of the beast. I hang mine when I can ... | |||||

| Going to disagree With DC Wilson. Not all modernist furniture was intended for low-cost markets. And the stuff that was generally is still fairly reasonable: Eames plastic & plywood chairs, Nelson benches, clocks & lamps, the Saarinen table etc. All of the really flamboyant pieces: Eames lounge, Swan Chair, Barcelona etc were intended for a luxury audience - even then. The idea of Modern as 'affordable' came out of a couple different factors. First, the popularity of the Eames, who diD create many low-cost items - but not all of their objects were low-co ... | |||||

| Point of disagreement Olive your point about things being in the public domain is valid, but I disagree that HM and Knoll are "pulling the wool" over anyone's eyes. For all the bickering back and forth about knock-offs the one near-universal truth is : you get what you pay for. I've seen LOTS of knock-offs and I have seen precious few that come even close to the quality of the authentic pieces. I dont doubt that some exist out there, but they are very few and far between. Of course any article should be balanced and fair, but that means encompassing ALL a ... | |||||

| I have to disagree Stephen... with your statement:"...It was only ever designed to look good in an expo hall. A case of form before function..." The original function of the Barcelona chair was to be used by the Queen and King of Spain during a brief word of welcome in the German Pavilion of the Barcelona world exhibition. It was designed to make them look gracious and to seat them comfortably for that short a period of time. I do not think that it was a product of pure functionality, it certainly was not, but it is not form before function, it is form and f ... | |||||

| I don't actually think we disagree, Koen. My principals in life long before changing careers was always ones of conservancy. I was taught as a kid to buy the best I can afford and expect to use it for years or perhaps a lifetime. I think many of us here on DA agree with that thought. And certainly the love of 'old' furniture and design objects and the restoration of such is a form of conservancy. I actually hate the term 'green' and it's very insidious evil twin 'green-washing'. Many products are being labelled 'green' --and therefore good for the environmen ... | |||||

| I disagree First, with Barry, that the Exec chair and Chaise are beautifully designed. Now beauty is one of those things that is very subjective, I know, so I go into this argument knowing it can never be 'won'. But here goes anyway... The Eames Time Life chair is clunky. Looking at it one has to ask: why? Why are the armrests almost as thick as they are wide? Why are they perched on two little bolts, instead of some more elgant hidden system? Why does the aluminum frame come only 2/3 up the backrest of the chair? Why are the frames perforated by no le ... | |||||

I disagree I think you should be able to talk about anything that has good design and Porsche and high performance cars have that, I think we can all agree talking about mid century modern furniture is great (my favorite topic) but it really does get a little boring talking about the same old same old and boring repoductions that we all agree are out of control with t he Chinese and the cheap manafactures so in my opinion, for what it is worth I enjoy talking ... | |||||

| I disagree with Olive Love her (and the concrete tub) but I'm uncomfortable with the class of knock-offs that she is suggesting. There are two reasons why. First: there is no qualifier as to the quality. We are only dealing with personal anecdote and opinion. What is to prevent an unreliable source from posting that their product is up to snuff? With a license holder there is a simple yes or no question: does the company hold the license? Second: As someone who is creative myself I really feel irked by someone who will make profit off of someone else's id ... | |||||

| To James I would respectfully disagree. I purchased a Rolex Submariner back in the early eighties after graduating from University and it has been on my wrist ever since. It has taken a frightful amount of abuse, from 60 feet below the surface of the ocean, I used to scuba dive, to building stonewalls. I've washed the dog and the car wearing it, and gone from jeans and a polo shirt, to business attire to formal wear with it and it always looks appropriate. It has kept perfect time and is perfectly readable in the dark of the theater to waking up in the middl ... | |||||

| Disagree Respectfully, Equality, I disagree with you. While the intent for some in the modernist movement may have had some ideas of democratic design those goals seem never to have been fully realized. The Barcelona chair - the seemingly ubiquitous emblem of modern design - was created explicitly for royalty. Mies himself described the for it to be "an important chair, a very elegant chair and costly. It had to be monumental. You couldn't just use a kitchen chair" (1929) | |||||
