| Selig chairs identification? McCobb Directional Sofa? | 2 Relevance | 12 years ago | mgee76 | Identification | |
| ... trouble finding more information about them. Do any of you recognize this chair, know what they are called, or have catalog images of them? They came from an estate which was furnished in the early 60's. Also from this estate is a sofa by Sedgefield, directional Design. The white sofa pictured is from a listing calling it Paul McCobb. The sofa from the sale has a bolster cushion that sits behind the four back cushions that I haven't seen before. It came with a set of short legs and a set of tall legs, like those on the white example. I'll try to take my own ... | |||||
| Paul McCobb or Harvey Probber Office Credenza? Directional/Calvin Furn. Co | 2 Relevance | 15 years ago | theurbanlink | General discussion | |
| ... in the cubblies on each side and back sides. The inner tag says directional furniture for Calvin Furniture Co. Grand Rapids, MI. Which is where I am located so I did some research at our local furniture archives and saw the directional book but none of the pieces look like mine. Any ideas? I also noticed that Harvey Probber made some pieces for directional as well. This design I think looks like more of his stuff. How do you go about getting confirmation? | Chair ID, maybe Directional? | 2 Relevance | 16 years ago | tchp | General discussion | |
| I have had this chair about a year. The foam has gone a bit solid (the cushions are not removable), but it is still comfortable, and the fabric is still really nice. No tags or markings (besides numbers), but nicely made. Legs are probably walnut. Just wondering if anyone recognizes the chair/maker. I seem to recall seeing something pretty similar by directional, but not quite the same. | |||||

| Directional designers After Paul McCobb's tenure as exclusive designer for directional from 1950 to 1959 many others were called upon, notably Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougal, Milo Baughman, Arthur Umanoff, George Mulhauser and of course Paul Evans along with others of lesser note and repute. Harvey Probber (who was not an individual as per se but rather a large and well established furniture design and manufacturing concern employing 100's of people) did not design for directional as far as I know. | |||||

| Paul MccCobb/Directional #407 Sofa | 2 Relevance | 16 years ago | straylight | General discussion | |
| Paul MccCobb/Directional #407 Sofa That is very clearly a #407 directional Sofa which was manufactured by Meyer, Gunther and Martini and is first seen in 1954. No question about that the piece is unmistakeable. I also know that in 1958 directional started working with an unnamed factory in Canada to manufacture goods there. The following is a quote from the April, 1958 issue of Interior Design: "The contemporary furniture collection designed by Paul McCobb will be manufactured for the first time in Canadian factories for distribution throughout the Dominion. ... | |||||
| Who Owned Directional? | 2 Relevance | 17 years ago | straylight | General discussion | |
| Who Owned directional? Directional was "owned" by B. G. Mesberg. Paul McCobb's work for directional was entirely on the basis of an independent contractor. He did receive some salary/fees plus a percentage of sales for those designs he made for the Mesberg concern. He was never a partner. | |||||

| OK...putting the dish on Paul McCobb | 2 Relevance | 19 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| OK...putting the dish on Paul McCobb I happen to like Paul McCobb's stuff alot, but have you noticed that his Planner Group stuff - by far the best selling American mid-century furniture line in the 1950's - is a distinct ripoff of George Nelson's Basic Cabinet collection from 1947-1952? And when Nelson and Herman Miller came out with their thin-walled Rosewood collection, McCobb's directional line showed up out of the clear blue sky. As I said, McCobb's stuff is real nice, but it is not particularly original. Remember, McCobb was not an architect....he was ... | |||||

| I discovered awhile back that | 2 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | Identification | |
| I discovered awhile back that if you right click on a photo and then select Open Image in New Tab (maybe it looks a little different on a pc? I have a mac), the photo will be the original size which is often way bigger. And sometimes that's just the display size and it can be made even bigger and still be clear. The photo of the arm is actually huge and offers a really clear view of the grain on that part of the chair. The others are not bad either. Maybe everyone else already knew this---in that case, never mind! Anyway, I'm not a wood ID person beyond ... | |||||
