The first thing I would do... | 2 Relevance | 12 years ago | tchp | General discussion
The first thing I would do... The first thing I would do is use a bar clamp to see how successfully the crack can be fully brought back together. Unless there is splintered wood inside the crack, I suspect it will clamp together pretty nicely, perhaps even so that you cannot really even see the crack. Then I would use a glue like Titebond, making sure to inject it into the crack so that all surfaces of the crack and the tenon get covered before clamping it back together again. It might take some care to make sure the glue does not come into contact with the cord. I think there is a good chance that it can be repaired very successfully.
The only thing that really bothers me | 2 Relevance | 11 years ago | Spanky | General discussion
The only thing that really bothers me on this forum is when I'm searching for a discussion about something or other, the search turns up individual message titles, not the thread title. It's pretty much impossible to figure out from a message title if that particular message is in the thread that I'm looking for and I end up clicking on each search result until I finally find the thread. I'm not sure how it could be done differently and it really doesn't interfere with my participation or enjoyment here but it's just the one thing that doesn't quite work for me.
Here's the thing, armadas... | 2 Relevance | 13 years ago | Lunchbox | General discussion
Here's the thing, armadas... I don't think you're all bad. I think you're green and damned touchy. But you've obviously got ALOT of passion which is a very good thing. Means you give a damn. But don't go shooting the messenger when they're trying to learn you something. There's really nothing wrong with replacing a set of runners, repairing the original set and putting them in storage. But that doesn't mean others won't think it's a bit manic. I'm damn manic and even I think that's manic. But the point is that doesn't mean it's the proper thing to do in general. If I'm going to keep something, I do what I want with it. That means it gets whatever treatment is necessary for it to maintain functionality and form whilst altering originality to the least degree. If I'm going to sell something I leave it alone and let the next guy/lass decide what they want to do with it. So alls I'm saying is take it easy, alright? You have a wealth of knowledge here. And I for one am happy to see some new blood now and then who give a shite. But if you're going to pay attention to every little nuance or require notarized literature for every little nuance, perhaps you should be a bit more discerning yourself? Just trust what the natives say. Lord knows we're critical enough around here. No one's going to provide anything other than honest, researched truth. The delivery may be harsh. But in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
Sad thing is. | 2 Relevance | 17 years ago | maryannescott | General discussion
Sad thing is. The sad thing is we bash this crappy chair ,but this chair wasn't meant for people who are into design. This chair just like most of the junk on the market that is geared to the masses. It isn't really meant for you or I.If we wanted a swan chair or egg chair we would search ,and find the real deal.Sadly; the vast majority of consumers really could care less about design really.Look in most homes today ,and I bet you will be hard pressed to find designer anything. If anything you will find wannabe items. Also; I don't think Target or Walmart should be where we search for treasure anyway.
Oh, one more thing. I'm not... | 2 Relevance | 18 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion
Oh, one more thing. I'm not... Oh, one more thing. I'm not crazy about how the seat and back shells come together at such sharp points where they connect (see first pic on Flickr). What's so great about these chairs are the fluid curves, so I'm thinking about rounding them off. I'll still need to keep the four screw holes contained in the shell, but I think just simply rounding off the two sharp points will make a huge difference (or at least it did in Photoshop). Then I'll paint all of that hardware black to match, and hopefully it'll disappear a bit into the black leather and dark walnut veneer (to come). LuciferSum, how hard was it to cut the rounded corners on yours when you cut it down? http://www.flickr.com/photos/7370173@N02/?saved=1
This is the sort of thing I... | 2 Relevance | 14 years ago | HPau | General discussion
This is the sort of thing I... This is the sort of thing I do(not mine) but I prefer to use it for passive solar and the like. If you emailed me a floor plan, gps co ordinates and accurate cardinal points sketched over the top the machine can produce a nice render based on that. Say you wanted to put in a window on one side, it can illustrate just how much depth of sunlight penetration you'll get in the middle of winter or conversely show how a sun shade at the front moved a few inches could produce a nicer shadow or prevent too much glare, it would be a fun simple project for me, and tongue chairs would be an easy modelling job. Up to you, apescrape at gmail.
The whole thing is... | 2 Relevance | 14 years ago | jesgord | General discussion
The whole thing is... The whole thing is fascinating to me. I find it hard to believe that CBS would let something like this slip through their hands, but you never know. If it turns out to be legitimate, I wonder if they would make a claim of ownership? Authenticity aside, it does not strike me as a particularly difficult piece for a skilled woodworker to fabricate. Looking at the picture of the sculpture "torn down" one almost has a template in place to create an accurate reproduction. The quality of the finished work would depend on the wood used and the abilities of the woodworker-no complex joints to mess with. I'm thinking about printing out the page and making a scale version in cardboard, then maybe balsa. I suspect the dimensions will have to be altered slightly due to distortion in the forms created by the camera angle?

an interesting thing ... | 2 Relevance | 17 years ago | LRF | General discussion
an interesting thing ... an interesting thing happened last week we got 4 eames arm shell chairs sent in, all black bottom fiberglass. The guys started stripping and reworking them and Joe came to me and told me 2 of the chairs are 1.4 inchs smaller than the other two, i was pretty amazed as for redoing over 200 arm shell chairs it is pretty cut and dry, of course we had to make a new pattern, but i kept wondering why Herman Miller would do that, I found out the answer 3 days later , Those smaller arm shell ones were for the tandems that they used in airports and bus stations, most of those that you see are just side shells , and i tried one time to put three armshells that i had in the warehouse on a tandem pole, and it would not fit, Has any one else ever known this ? that there are 2 sizes of armshells floating around out there.
