Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) 1964, The Netherlands. A child’s wheelbarrow, designed in 1923, executed in 1964 by: Gerard van de Groenekan. The first example was probably made as a birthday present for H. (Hans) Oud, the son of J.J.P. Oud (the latter was also a member of the Stijl). This example was made for Meta Struycken after her birth on June 26, 1964. The independent geometric components of this design have clearly been accentuated. Painted in the colours of De Stijl. This is one of the few De Stijl designs featuring a circle as a formal element. Under this wheelbarrow a white label with the name of G. van de Groenekan has disappeared. Provenance: Mrs. M. (Meta) Struycken (who’s father was the visual artist P. (Peter) Struycken, who commissioned this piece together with the children’s chair that is now in the Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag.) Documentation on the provenance available. 30x81x38 cm. €24,000 – €26,000 Special sale Design Auction 18/04/2018 online catalogue : https://wavemaker.venduehuis.com/auction?auction=85
