This exquisite Spanish Revival oak drinks cabinet, once used to decorate a flamboyant interior, was commissioned by a wealthy individual and made to order by highly skilled master craftsmen in the latter half of the nineteenth century. A stunning leather and studded brass-fronted cabinet rests atop two carved lyre-like legs with a forged iron support – very characteristic of these Spanish Revival pieces. Very much inspired by the bargueño cabinets of Renaissance Spain, but reimagined for Victorian aristocratic tastes. The J. Bates of Wolverhampton-marked lock and elephant-marked hinges places this piece from around the 1880s, on the cusp of the Art Nouveau movement that would come to prominence in the following years. The floral pattern on the leather front is stitched and hand-painted in pleasing earthy hues, and on the side and base we find wood carvings in muted greens, reds and yellows. The limed oak interior of the cabinet is divided by a single shelf, ideal for storing champagnes and wines, which were incredibly popular at the time. This timeless piece would be a remarkable addition to any home, complementing interiors from any era. We are in the search for the right key.
