The architect and designer Louis Kalff joined Philips in 1925.

In 1946 he was appointed as Philips’ chief designer and head of the lighting division. In this position, he designed a large number of lighting fixtures.

The design of this lamp seems to predict the shape of Louis Kalff’s architectural masterpiece: the Philips exhibition center ‘Evoluon’ which was realized in Eindhoven in 1966.
