This vintage table lamp was probably made by the English Company Beswick. It has many of the design features: the dog theme, a quality figurine depicted with realism, good colour & glaze. The Terrier dog was popular in the early 20th Century, and represented in many objects, paintings and decorations for the home. With its delicate proportions and cute animal theme in the Art Deco style, this light works well as a side lamp on a table, desk, or shelf. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Country, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, or Contemporary.
The composition consists of four parts, a ceramic figurine of a Yorkshire Terrier dog stands sideways on two ceramic books. Behind there is a black lamp base leading to the lamp holder. Looking in detail, a ceramic Yorkshire Terrier dog has white paws, painted eyes and perky brown ears & tail. The paint effect gives texture and is finished in gloss. The books making up the base are glossy black with painted brown `book corners` and the pages are painted a gold matte gilt From the back the figurine is as well detailed as the front. Cleverly the silk cable comes out from a discrete hole in the tree trunk.
At the bottom there is new white felt to protect the furniture when this lamp is in place. The lamp holder has a gilt metal cover that adds a golden tone to the design. The light is finished with a removable new clip-on black silk lampshade. This has a gold metallic lining and edged with a black fabric trim.

BESWICK POTTERY HISTORY Beswick was an English pottery manufacturer, founded in 1894 by James Wright and his sons John and Gilbert in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. It was not until the 1930`s, and specifically the introduction of a high fired bone china in 1934, that the firm turned to the animal modelling for which they would become known for. In 1969, the business was sold to Doulton & Co. Ltd. The factory closed in 2002 and the brand John Beswick was sold in 2004.
